I know this does not help much, but mine does the same thing and I just keep bouncing it back and forth, a little harder each time until it stays shut.
What is that all about? How inconvenient! Anyone else have this problem or did we get faulty units?

There is a sort of flap that hangs down towards the bottom of the printer at back. If you push the flap up, or somehow push part way up as you close the cover, it should close for you. We've had at least two different printers with the same issue (after it giving message of: Open reg cover paper jam). Try that and see if it helps.
I had this same problem when trying to install the optional duplexer. My printer was under warranty and Dell sent a technician to replace the "Vertical Transport Assembly." The technician replaced the part but the door still wouldn't close. The technician finally slammed the door hard enough to stick but the next time I had a paper jam I couldn't close the door again. By accident I found that tipping the printer forward onto its face made the little "flap" in the lower rear fall into place and the door would close.
