if you used the the windows method there is a good chance your motherboard is toast. the floppy method is a safer way to update the bios.

do you see A11 on the bios in setup?

the controller is the same for both drives. it could of just went bad. you could try to downgrade your bios.

you could try to reseat the drives. set the bios to default. it's looking like a MB.

Remove the keyboard and disconnect the Palmrest connector for about 15 minutes. That disconnects the CMOS Battery also and resets BIOS defaults. If the HDD on this model is not detected, a perfectly good Fixed Optical CD Drive will not be detected either, since it is slaved to the HDD. It is a peculiarity of all the Inspiron 8***/Latitude C8** series.

Yes it shows up in both the boot window and the setup windows on page 1 of 7 in the list everything shows up except

Primary Hard Drive: None

Fixed Optical Drive: None
