Got ahold of Microsoft and the sent me a link to the "hotfix" and the proper passwords. Actually, they were very responsive with that part. But the hotfix only worked a little (a lukewarm fix?). Now I can retrieve some of the data from the card but can not write to it or delete anything. Still working on it...
I have a 17" XPS and am having the same problem. I downloaded the hotfix from Microsoft mentioned above (hf921413) but it didn't do anything differently - still didn't work - Code 10 - yellow exclamation mark in the device manager. I seem to recall the SD reader worked when the system was first unpacked, but hasn't worked in the last few months. My sons Dell reads it just fine though - Dell Inspiron. I'm not sure what's different.
BTW: I downloaded the hotfix from this site - since I got tired of waiting on MS (30 minutes of talking to India and still no help)
Thanks for the tip and link. Unfortunately, my XPS M170 does the same as yours. I installed the patch, rebooted, thinking, "Oh boy, this is goona do it!" Yeah, right. Welcome to Microsoft. Someone else mentioned that they got the hotfix from Microsoft support and had to use a password to install it. Hmmm, not in my case. Anyway, I'm still perplexed. What the heck is the problem?
My next step is to use the install disk that came with my system to perform a repair. Maybe that will do the trick.
In any case, thanks for the help. It WAS worth a try. Oh, yeah, one more thing. I contacted Kingston, (SD Card Manufacturer), and all I got from them was, " send in the card for a replacement. Huh! I don't need a replacement, the card works fine on my other computers.
dell inspiron 6000. i had also gotten the micosoft hotfix, but that just kade the yellow error on the device manager go away. latter loaded the progs mentioned and it work ed.
I tried all of your suggestions except the last one (KB891122), which, when attempting to install, said wasn't for my system. (Windows XP SP2 MCE. After a fresh reboot, my card still wasn't seen.
I have tried all of the above suggestions. I talked to Microsoft and Dell. I called Dell again and they are going to send out an on site technician to replace the motherboard on my laptop because nothing else worked. If your hardware is still under warranty give them a call as soon as you can.
I forget which person posted that they can read data off their card, but not write to it. To that person, Double check the security slider. It's like an old floppy, if it's flipped, you can't write to it, but can read from it.
That's interesting that Dell would send out a tech. When we called them they told us it was a software issue, we have our hardware under warranty but not the software.
I've gone through all of the software fixes they suggested with one of their support guys and finally he decided to send someone out to replace the motherboard.
Yes, I checked my SD card's security slider to be sure it is not locked. The problem turned out to be a hardware issue. The motherboard was bad. Dell Technical support replaced it. Now I can read the card, sometimes. At others, it says the card needs to be formatted. I can only do that if I use an USB cable and an external card reader.
