Inspiron Backlight / Inverter problem - dim screen, no adjustment possible

Question

We have an Inspiron 8600 WUXGA that the screen can no longer be brightened / dimmed via the bios or keyboard (FN + Up / FN + Dn). The screen is uniform brightness, albeit at the lowest brightness. Is this typically caused by a bad Inverter or an LCD / backlight problem?

it's hard to be sure, but i would say probably inverter. a backlight usually manifests differently, ie uneven brightness or red/pink hue. any other opinions?

It's much more likely to be the bulb than the inverter. If you have an external monitor, run the Dell diags (f12 at boot). They should pick up a faulty inverter. They won't pick up a faulty bulb.

Unfortunately, we don't have the utility partition on the system.  So... maybe I can download that Dell Diagnostic utility and see if that does it.    When you say the bulb, do you mean the backlight?
