System Locks Up after Norton 2007 installation

Question

Hello all,   I recently purchased Norton AV 2007, and since the install my PC (Dimension e310, less than 1yr old) locks up like mad.  I have Comcast 6M service, which came with MacAfee...but I was unsatisfied with the software after I encountered a *serious* issue with hijacking.  I have resolved the hijackers (for the most part) with SpyBot S&D, but during the battle I threw in the towel in relation to MacAfee and downloaded and installed NAV.  Seems like I may have made a mistake, since now my PC locks up like there's no tomorrow.  I launched safe mode and checked to ensure that MacAfee was gone completely, but from what I've been reading it appears that some component of MacAfee may still be there, hidden in some way.   I'm nearly to the point where I cut my losses and blast out the HDD and re-install...but I thought it might not be a bad idea to check the forums for folks who may have the same problem.   Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance for any and all assistance!

to be sure, download the norton removal tool (NRT) from symantec and remove NAV2007 first.  Reboot.  Then run the mcafee remvoal tool second.  Reboot.  Then reinstall NAV2007.  If you activated it it will remember the activation.    (remove the first http:// in the mcafee link above to work)
