Inspiron 6400 with X1400 missing bottom 1/3 of screen

Question

I am having intermittent problems with the bottom third of my screen not displaying or displaying vertical lines of various colours (note: just the bottom third of the screen). If I close the laptop and reopen it the screen it displays fine and the problem does not reoccur during the session.   This tends to occur only after I haven't used the computer for a day or so but if I reboot the notebook immediately after the problem does not reoccur.   Should I be worried that I have a faulty video card or is there a simple fix to this problem (other than closing the notebook and reopening it)   Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide.

Does the same problem show up if you attach an external monitor?

Excellent question. When I hooked up an external monitor to the notebook, the notebook continued to display (at least for a few minutes) with the bottom third of the screen missing however the external monitor displayed without any problems. So, while I could view the full screen on the external monitor I could only view the top 2/3 of the screen on the notebooks screen.   Do you think this means that there is something wrong with the notebooks monitor?
