Hi, I just got a dell Inspiron spection 6400 and I have a ATI mobility radeon X1300 video card. From day one I got the ati2dvag problem. Screen goes black then a blue screen comes up. I can't find a fix anywhere that works. If you find any thing that works let me know.
I'm trying to take this thing back, curse it I should of got the model below.
Update - still haven't done a restore on my laptop - I'm going to wait until after Christmas to go through that mess. I seem to be able to run for longer and longer periods without losing everything and right now it isn't worth the trouble to try and reload all of my software and then just hope that it will work.
That's why I keep delaying on going the Restore route - I really don't want to mess with it but I may not have a choice. Which program was causing you the issue?
After messing around with this some more this morning, I am discovering that IE7 seems to be the root of many of my problems. It has caused conflicts with QuickBooks, Roxio and various other software. We'll see if an uninstall works (and possibly a reinstall, but I don't know - I'm a little nervous now!).

hey weaver , seriously treat the PC restor route as your very last option ! first determined which programs are running when you encounter the ati2dvag problem . i managed to solve mine as its the problem of this program that i always run on my comp . so maybe if you can detect the program , you might just find the root of the prob .
The problem arose whenever i play World of Warcraft and reaching a certain ' zone ' within that game . It happened to a few of my friends too . So we contacted the game manager about it and he clarified with us that apparently , its some glitches within that affected zone that causes the video driver of different random computers to malfunction . So i guess the same thing is happening for you too , just that its of a different program .
I've been running since my last message with no errors - however, I haven't restored my Active Desktop. That now appears to be the common denominator. I've had so much to do on my laptop that I didn't want to start messing with things again. That will now happen after Christmas when I uninstall IE7 and try reinstalling (or sticking with IE6). Strange.
One other strange thing - when I click on my "My Documents" folder from the Active Desktop - I get a message stating that I have an "unspecified security risk" and asking whether I want to open the folder anyway. When I choose to go ahead and open it - it opens like normal. I'm getting the feeling that this is all related. I ran an AVG scan along with SpyBot Search and Destroy and there appears to be no serious issues. Ah, well. Such is life!
I'm afraid that this issue has yet to be resolved for me, either. I do go for long periods without the blue screen and then it comes up again. I am VERY unhappy. As I've checked around online, I am now thinking that this is a problem endemic to the E1505/6400s. Not good!
I kept on getting this ati2davag issue for about 4 weeks right from when I got the computer (I've got a radeon 1300). I had enough and told Dell I wanted it fixed, replaced or my money back. I also got some legal advice on the matter and I was fully in my rights to get the computer replaced or a refund.
Dell kept telling me to reinstall windows and to check all sorts of random things but once I told them I was seeking legal advice they sent someone out to replace the card. Haven't had any problems since.
Really annoyed me how Dell told me all this useless rubish and couldn't tell me what was wrong. One support person told I didn't have any sort of chance of getting a replaced computer. Come on the laptop got this ati2dvag issue from day 1, 2 hours after I started it but it took 4 weeks to fix it.
I tried PC Restore - no good. Reinstalled IE7 (I really thought that might be the problem) - no good. I've now contacted Dell for a video card replacement because I think that might be it. Generally you won't get a computer replacement unless it is in the first thirty days - after that, they will try to fix the issues one by one. That's where I am at this point!
Did anyone ever find a fix for this bug? Either through dell or by some recommendation? I had the problem twice before, both times after restoring the E1505 from sleep mode. System restore seemed to fix it temporarily, but it appears that it's re arising when I visit a certain webpage with Firefox. I didn't think it possible that a specific page could cause the problem but it does appear for me that that is what it's doing now.
It's happened 3 times recently, two times the display completely cut off and after a restart via power button each time I got a windows error message saying that it couldn't locate the ati2dvag driver if I remember correctly. System restore didn't fix it this time. The most recent time the LCD lights remained on but the screen went black. I haven't had the blue box pop up yet (I did get it the first time this problem happened a couple weeks ago), but I don't wait around for it. I simply restart after the error occurs.
What you are describing has just begun happening to me as well (in addition to the blue screen). Everything will appear to be on - but the screen has gone black. I don't have my laptop set up to go into sleep mode - it appears to happen randomly - this morning when I switched from battery to AC power. I noticed my WIFI light was on and the hard drive light would blink when I clicked a key. So, now I'm wondering about the screens! What a mess!
They only I got this problem fixed was for the Dell support person to change my video card. Unless he changed something else on the computer that I don't know about that is the only thing that fixed it.
Get onto Dell and get it replaced. Sounds like no one knows what the problem or solution is and looks like hardware. I've never come across something where there has been so many different solutions from a technical support provider.
I'm walking through things very slowly with Dell so that they eliminate every possibility - since the computer at least runs (though strangely) and it is intregral to my work - I am trying to do this in such a way that it doesn't interrupt my work and yet can be solved. Dell claims it isn't the video card because it passes the video card test in the diagnostics. Right! Again - this is so random that I can't force it into the error - it just "happens." Here's the latest communication with them (and it hasn't solved the problem or even diagnosed it:

Weaverworks, as the diagnostics passed, the issue seems to be with the LCD screen. In order to isolate the issue, I would suggest you to I would suggest you to please download the video drivers on your system. To do so, please refer to the web link below, which will enable you download the specific video drivers for your system:
If the issue persists, please attach an external monitor (if available) and check if the issue persists there or not.
To properly attach an external monitor:
1.Shutdown the system and make sure that the external monitor is turned off. 2.Connect the external monitor to the video port on the back of the unit and verify that it is connected to a power source. 3.Turn on the External Monitor. 4.Turn on the System. 5.Wait until Windows is fully loaded so that the video driver can properly

I have done a system restore! IT DID NOT WORK. The problem persists.
I've also tried the Omega Drivers, modded official ATI drivers, no Catalyst Control Center; all suggestions that could cause the problem.
I also occasionally get a NMI Parity Error; presumably a memory issue but MemTest86+ and Dell Diagnostics find no issue.
It now takes about 6 - 8 times of booting and hard restarting to get a usable system on my Dell.
However, once it is running it is absolutely fine (even with 3D games like Half-Life 2) until I restart when the issue resurfaces.
I also occasionally notice problems with the displayed image on startup due to what looks like bad refresh...
So do I have a defective ATI Card and / or Screen?
Best give Dell a call this week, unless anyone else has any suggestion!?
