Dell in their infinite wisdom have told me to PC Restore my 6400 as my system won't resume after standy-by. I've followed all of their advice and this is the final part before it gets sent back. (The problem is associated with USB devices that are connected - none connected and it works fine, but I'm not doing that on a new PC)

So the question is, I have a backup file on my D drive: will the D drive be wiped as well as the C drive if I do restore or can I restore and backup from the D drive?

D is Norton Ghost's storage area, has nothing to do with Dell PC Restore by Symantec.  If you run Dell PC Restore, it should re-image the C partition only and leave D untouched, that's my understanding.

Well, I did as Dell and PC restored ... didn't make any difference, but I've worked out that it is the modem and driver software that is the root all of evil.

However, now I'm having trouble transferring my original data back. Drive D and the backup files are present, but when I go through the transfer wizard it says it does not contain stored information, even though it does! (File name is USMT2.UNC with 5Gb inside)

Help would be appreciated!

Drive D, unless you changed something, contains a GHOST image and can only be restored with Ghost...

hi
you all seem to know about the PC restore, so here's my question.
i bought a inspiron 9400 with a 200 gig hard disk. the c drive WAS 200 gig, but i partitioned it with partition magic so my windows c: has 20 gig and my E: has the rest.

if my system messes up, can i do the PC restore to the original dell settings (like when i first opened the laptop) ? and will it erase my e:? i wanna keep the data on my e:

thanks

I restored and my D drive was apparently unaffected.

I spent most of the past couple of days trawling the net for info on my situation and it seems that I am not alone with Windows F.A.S.T. problems. Having had no benefit from Ghost (which you have to pay for after 90 days anyway) I've tried fastcon.exe which tells me that there are no source (dat and status) files when they are clearly present, so I'm resigned to having lost it all.

The only common piece of advice advice that I can pass on from what I've found is, "AVOID USING THE WINDOWS FILE AND SETTINGS TRANSFER WIZARD" at all cost and use any other method you can find.

Dog Biscuit, your file and settings transfer (F.A.S.T.) thingy.
i format my desktop computer on a monthly basis.
i pop in the windows cd and boot with it. then i do a quick ntfs format and install windows again :)

now that i have my dell inspiron 9400, bought it last month, i haven't formatted yet.
i don't know why you use the f.a.s.t. ? i have been doing fine without it...

photos, songs and videos i copy to a second partition, and i take screenshots of the 'settings/properties/config' menu of my programs and screenshots of my ip addresses and stuff, do you do that too?

any comments? should i use f.a.s.t to make it easier for me?
:)

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question, answered many times before.

No, you can't, since you disabled it by running PM.  You would have to repair the function.

Systems shipped after July 15, 2004 came with Symantec PC Restore. This utility restores the computer to an "as-shipped" condition. If you haven't reformatted, repartitioned, or otherwise modified the master boot record, it should work. Click here for instructions about Symantec PC Restore.

If the Symantec PC Restore utility won't work, but still resides on your computer, a Dell customer has figured out some ways to get it to work again. Note - If you removed this partition, it is not recoverable, cannot be downloaded from the internet, and cannot be shipped from Dell. Click here for ways to fix Symantec PC Restore. Users have also reported that the partition can be restored with Ghost 2003, and Ghost 9 using the '03 capabilities of it. If you boot to the Ghost 9 CD, select Advanced Recovery Taks, select Utilities, then Restore Legacy Image it should work - but you want to verify the image before attempting the restore. It's in a folder called IMG.

Systems that shipped beginning in early 2005 ship without a Windows XP CD. You can contact Dell and request a CD and wait for it to ship, see Contact Us at the bottom of the page.

Well what do you know???

I was bored manually retsoring my files and so I decided to browse the "optional" software updates for Windows XP through my autoupdate browser and what do I find? An XP file that is for FATS issues ...

Considering that I am far from alone in this FATS mess, why is it "optional"? Don't reply to that!

Suffice to say, that I have restored all of my stuff (even though I have already done 60% manually already!)

Hope this helps someone somewhere. :smileyhappy:
