Do you have Windows Update set to Auto? Do you have Service Pack 2 (right click My Computer and select Properties)? Windows updates are critical and you should always be installing all of the critical updates and service packs.
Check your wireless adapter driver as well. I had a problem like yours where the latest driver broke WEP Shared Key and WPA security (I couldn't connect with these security protocols) but could connect when the access point was set to no security. As soon as I rolled back the adapter driver to the prior version I could use the security settings. It seems the intel drivers are making changes to support WPA2 and breaking the lower WEP/WPA protocols.
You may need to either upgrade or downgrade your adapter driver depending on when you last upgraded.
I have the same problem. I cant connect when security is enabled. My hard drive needed to be replaced so I had to reinstall OS and drivers. Since then I cant connect. I can connect to wireless hot spot and my router when security is not enabled. I cant roll back to previous driver with a new hard drive. What do I do?
