Hi everybody,
Last week I've upgrade the BIOS version from A28 to A32 successfully. After that I've noticed that the Service-Tag value is empty.
Looking back at the old A28 history info (my saved text file), approved that it was the same,  no Service-tag value was written.

My questions are:
1. What is the benefit if the Service-tag will be written or not in the BIOS?
2. Can I use the "asset.exe" or another utility to set the Service-tag code
into my Inspiron 1100 A32 BIOS?
3. Currently I've set the HDD password (only) in the BIOS section.
In case I would like to delete  this password in the future,
what is the correct way/steps to do it?
Thanks.

The benefit of having your Service Tag in the BIOS is that it is the Serial Number for your system.  That make sure that it will always be with your system in case it gets stolen.

Another benefit, if you loose your password, Dell can give you a Master Password to use.  But the Master Password is based on your Service Tag.  Without it, I don't believe that hte Master Password will work.

To install the Service Tag, you can use Dell's asset program.  Make sure that you follow the instructions.

As to how to remove the hard drive password, I believe that if you delete it from your BIOS, it will also delete it from your hard drive.  I am not 100% sure on this last one.  I am sure someone will stop by and confirm this or not.

Thank you   Bay Wolf  for your quick answers!

While surfing the BIOS questions in this forum, I found some of your posts. One of them was dealing about this issue.
There was a link for :  Asset Utility - ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/R109071.exe
Looking at the PDF (another link in that post), I can't find the Inspiron 1100 model.

So, can you help me with this one?

Thanks a lot.

Do you have a floppy drive?  The reason that I ask, the download that you linked to in the last post is a utility that creates a bootable floppy disk with the asset program on it.

Without a floppy disk, the download will not run.

If you do have a floppy drive, then HERE you can find the instructions on how to create the bootable floppy disk.

Yes, I have a usb floppy (almost never used - because I don't like this "unstable/shaky.." thing)

Anyway, I already read the instructions.

You didn't mention nothing concerning the ASSET.COM utility and DELL Inspiron 1100 model
compatibility question in my last post.
Can I assume thah your answer is.... "Never mind" or "don't ask.." or "It's Okay"? :smileywink:

Thanks again,
Alon C.
