Which drivers did you download?  ATI or Omega?  Basically...once you reboot...you will have no drivers running...then you do a clean install of the new drivers

No...you uninstall from Control Panel...Add/Remove Programs.  Run the ATI Software Uninstall Utility...it will remove the drivers...reboot.  After reboot  you clean the registry...yes...ATI and ATI Technologies...and reboot one more time...then install the new drivers.  I am online and monitoring your progress...any questions simply respond...

When you reboot...you will have video...XP has native drivers (non accelerated VGA drivers that it will run on).  You will be prompted to install and search for drivers...cancel it and install the downloaded ones...

You can get mobile drivers from ATI directly at:

I recommend that before you install the new drivers..  Then run regedit and delete ATI from HKEY_Current User/Software and HKEY_Local Machine/Software...reboot and install the Catalyst 6.12 from ATI.  I have run the ATI drivers on my E1505 since day 1.

Another option is to run Omega's Drivers:

He tweaks and re-writes some of the ATI code for maximum performance

Absolutely.  All you would need to is uninstall the ATI drivers and reinstall the Dell ones.  I found that my performance on my x1400 is better with the ATI drivers.  Seems that most OEMS like Dell, HP and the lot...seem do downclock their drivers...not sure why...

ok thats it for me tonight. I've tried twice and haven't been able to cancel the drivers. When I restart the little pop up window says found new hardware and I can't seem to cancel it. maybe theres an option somewhere to prevent auto install

No No...you're doing it right...let the little pop up go...then a windows installation window will open and you close that.  Without the pop up...you won't get the VGA install...that's fine...it's when it finally installs the VGA card that a big window pops up looking for drivers...then you close that and install your download

The big window may never appear.  After the pop ups are done...it might say something like a VGA card has been installed...or some other message.  After the popups are done...you install the ATI drivers

Here is a guide to bookmark:

The addition that  I had was to clean the registry because "sometimes" ATI drivers duplicate registry entries that can cause lag and other issues.  Cleaning the registry and rebooting keeps that from happening...

99% of the time...ATI sends you to your OEM website to download their drivers.  Whether Dell, Gateway, HP or any other OEM...they make their own adjustments to the drivers.  The download I gave you was straight from the ATI ftp server...updated every month.

alright thanks a lot. This was a lot more help than I was expecting.

As it turned out my biggest problem was thinking since I went to the ATI site and downloaded the driver I didn't have to download from your link, as I thought they were going to be the same thing
