security-KEY also called WEP or WPA

Question

My husband got his own laptop for christmas and we can't get it connected to our wirless router and internet.   On my Inspiron I'we named my network and typed in som sort of key (also caled WEP or WPA) but I have no Idea what this is (it shows as onely dots in the typing field)   Where can I get it og a new one from?
