Dell Inspiron 2200: Sound Driver Problem? PLEASE READ!

Question

When I have any set of headphones plugged into my Dell Inspiron 2200 I can hear noises. I think it might actually be the hard drive spinning or something. I used to be able to hear a beep when opening programs from the task bar, but I can't anymore. This never happened when I used Ubuntu Linux, and that's why I think it's a sound driver problem or something. I have all system sounds turned off, but it could possibly be a setting I am not aware of. I just reinstalled Windows, installed the sound drivers from dell.com, but I still have this problem. Any ideas?

Following the XP reinstall did you first install the notebook system software and the chipset driver and then the other drivers?  Are there any yellow-flagged items in device manager? Message Edited by europa303 on 01-21-200711:57 AM

Ah, there are actually. It's the Video and Ethernet drivers that are marked though.

I know I installed the chipset driver first, but I don't think I installed the notebook drivers at first. Are they the dell quickset drivers?

If you're downloading to another computer you can burn a CD or use a flash drive to copy the files to your 2200, then install from there. Some of these are up to 8 MB files.

I did everything you told me. I looked in device manager and the only thing that is marked as a problem is when I show hidden devices 'serial' comes up as marked. I think that may have been due to a tweak I did to clear up resources though, but I don't think that would have to do with my sound anyway. Why would this problem exist in Windows but not in linux? Thank you for all your help up to this point :)

Install the following two drivers for internal modem and touchpad.
