There are different kinds of Li-ion batteries... those with memories, and those without. For those without, like the one in your laptop (and mine, and my iPod), you should trickle-charge them... basically, keep them topped-up. This is the opposite of cellphone batteries, that should be discharged before charging them, because they have memories.
I keep my battery in my laptop, and rarely use it without the AC adapter, and the battery seems to be pretty much as good as it was when new 2 years ago (I'm not sure exactly how long the battery lasts, as I don't use it on battery very often).
