Inspiron 5160 Notebook AC Adapter issue resolved by Docking Station?

Question

Hi,   A lot of users have pointed out the AC Adapter problem with DELL Inspiron 5160 laptop. There seems to be some problem with the power socket in the mother board because of which the laptop does not charge when connected to the AC Adapter. I am having the same issue.   Somebody in an earlier post had mentioned that the laptop charges when connected to an external monitor.   I was wondering if connecting to a Docking Station would help in any way? Has anybody tried this out?   Thanks, Bikash.

This model does not have a docking station option. It is possible that connecting an external monitor allows enough of a connection to the power jack for now to operate the charger - however, it won't for long before the jack needs to be replaced and soldered in, or you end up having to replace the system board.

Hi,

Replacing the mother board may cost me upwards of $400 as per other posts. Do you think it is worthwhile for me to open the laptop and try to solder the loose power jack? Has anybody given it a try yet?

Unless you have done such soldering before and have the equipment, you're more likely to destroy the board than fix it - leave it to a pro.
