Inspiron 1501 - Gray Screen - system is unusable

Question

I have a brand new Inspiron 1501 with Vista Basic. I have not installed any apps or updates and I have twice experienced the screen turning gray with vertical lines spread across the screen. The laptop is unresponsive at this point and requires a power cycle to get it back up and running. This behavior is basically happening on a fresh 'out of the box' laptop. Very frustrating. Any thoughts on what could be the problem? Thanks, Tom UPDATE: I had the laptop plugged in and powered on. Only program running was IE on the default Dell home page. It sat idle for about 15 minutes and all of the sudden a screen that resembled a tv channel with the snow effect and a static sound coming from the speakers.
