It doesn't appear to have done the trick on the 1720, might be a slight improvement but it's still happening... I'll put up with it for now but they can certainly have the whole thing back if a solution isn't forthcoming.

Already had the latest BIOS for my 1710 - version A07. Doesn't make a difference.

Decided to send an email to Dell support the other day - I've had my 1710 for around 6 months and the disable enhancements workaround worked for the skip before the end of an mp3, but not for the popping during playback while using the lightfx plugins in WMP. Their solution was to remove the lightfx plugins completely which might fix the popping, but I thought the whole point of the plugins and LEDs was to be able to have light effects in tune with the music playing in WMP. Removing the plugins seems to make the LEDs a waste to me...

And that still doesn't fix it...

Try this just to make you sick.... Open up the LightFX and while you are playing music slide the bars up and down.... Talking about sad.....

I reverted to a junk eMachine to do my audio since I found the poor audio well after the 21 day restock.

Dell replaced my motherboard/speakers and wifi but still didn't help so after 45+ days they shipped a new M1710 and it is worse than the first.

I had both a Dell image of XP and Vista and out of the box the sound crackled and popped.

...and if that wasn't enough I saw on another thread (B130) that they seem to have a real fix with their A10 BIOS. It states, "1. Fix sometimes intermittent pops or stutters while playing music."

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&deviceid=10101&libid=1&releaseid=R140502&vercnt=9&formatcnt=0&SystemID=INSPIRON1300/B130&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1

Now if only after "4 or 5 YEARS" we, the other model owners might get the same solution...???

Wow, that would be amazing!
I really hope they hurry up with the E1705 BIOS fix! Disabling 802.11a mostly worked for me but I still hear the occasional skip and it's like... not totally annoying, but an interruption, you know? And every time I hear it I think of how it's not possible for me to fix it and ... well, that occasional little stutter somehow really bugs me.

Sooooo, yeah. AEV, please let us know as soon as you find the A10 BIOS for E1705/9400, E1505, M1710, and all the rest of the computers on here that have been affected. And let's hope it ends this problem once and for all!

There maybe a saturation sound problem...

And there's as well another possible partial fix I have to suggest... Since I updated my mouse drivers (SetPoint440 from Logitech) there's less problem. It now appear clearly on Logitech boards that there's an incompatibility between Synaptics touchpad drivers and Logitech SetPoint one... version 4.40 seems to solve it partially.

After many test, some pop occurs sometime, especially on application like TeamSpeak...

I note that sound go into "saturation" volume very often and don't find a way... to solve that... it's like if all the sound was amplified from the beginning for some sources.

Anyway, I still think it's a driver conflict issue and maybe even a problem with my nVidia driver (there's nothing really new from Dell on this side for my Go8700 GT SLI system and they didn't posted anything new... now that XPS 1730 ship with 8800 and no 8700...)

I really hope they'll finally find a fix for this problem, this is really boring... no longer big hiss and pops, just some random crack, sometime, and not on every application, but happens on my USB headphone as well ad on my Sigmatel card.

Regards.

I have a brand new xps m1330, with Vista, and i have the same problem. Using the wireless and listening to music at the same time is not possible without having choppy skipping music. offcourse turning off the wireless does solve the trick, but that is no solution.

Normally I use Winamp, but it is also with windows media player. and it does not matter where the sound comes from, (harddisk or CD).

What i have tried:

- Installed the latest drivers for my wireless card (Dell 1505) and audio (Sigmatel). No results.

- Turning off 802.11A band in properties of the wireless in device manager. (no solution, i cannot use the wireless on my university anymore)

- Update the bios to A09. Downloadable from support.dell.com for the XPS. But no results

- Disable all enhancements. No results

- Change to a different powerplan. No results

Then I requested a chat with a Dell employee. He installed PIOtoDMA. Something i allready checked. Still no results. Then he installed Anti Vista Lag, which made the problem less occuring, but still not resolved. I chatted for around one hour with him, but my problem is not solved. It was send to the "product group". I just have to wait for a reply from them..

In another topic I found some tweaks for the wireless card, also in the devicemanager > properties of wireless card:

Select in the list box "AP Compatibility Mode" and set it "Advanced"
Select the "Roam Tendancy" and select "Conservative"  (I think this is a major possibility here...)
Select the "Roaming Decision" and select "Optimize Bandwidth"
But also no better result.

What i haven't tried is to use another wireless card, because i don't want to. I have it build in, and thats the wireless i want to use. Nothing else. (I didn't pay for an wireless upgrade and then not using it!!!)

Dell just has to provide a BIOS update like they did for some inspiron series.

It's very anoying to spend a lot of money for a laptop that cant even play music and use the wireless at the same time.

.....and what is even worse and I have stated it many times; This has been a Dell issue for 4 or 5 years and with both XP and Vista.

I think people here are smart enough to conclude that past owners of system now out of warranty and owners of systems long-in-the-tooth as well as the new purchased owners will never see a fix. I mean be real about this. Look how long just this thread is and do you think anyone has seen a true fix to the problem.

... we never will.... (hack all you want but, a hack is still a hack and not a fix)

2 OS's in various flavors and dozens of models (laptops and desktops) Why just Dell and not all of the other manufacturers?? I read a post in the Sony forums about 4 years old talking about how they fixed this issue back in the days with a timing fix in the BIOS. Something about how the circuit was timed on and off... Again Sigmatel is widely used and this only seems to be a Dell issue.

So I'm just as unhappy as the next person that I have an M1710 maxed out and the audio is so bad I can't even use it. I saved for a year to buy a machine that would be as mobile as I was and in audio/visual training I can't live in front of a client with snap crackle and pop.

I've got some news for you. I have a Brand New Inspiron 1720 Laptop and I installed the recent Bios update and that didn't fix it for me. So Inspiron users like myself are still feeling CHEATED BY DELL just like you. I guess we can only hope they fix it... or if you paid for the complete care package I guess you could run over it with your car and hope you get a new one that works!

DOES ANYONE.......... find it wrong that this thread now displays SOLVED!!!!

Yes, AEV, I was thinking the exact same thing.

HELLO! DELL! THIS IS NOT SOLVED! LEARN ENGLISH AND READ OVER IT AGAIN!!!!

I almost feel like we need to get together and all call Dell, pretty much every day, collect names and extensions of Dell managers or people high-up that can get things done, and then bug them until something is done. It's bad enough that they leave us with our 1+-year-old laptops to be broken, but even the NEW laptops are broken in this same way, and that's just wrong.

I own a website (just a personal one) so I was thinking I'll probably create a subdomain site with full info about this problem, the hacky solutions available so far, other tips and things from this thread, hardware info about the people affected by the problem, etc. and then hopefully some sort of collective phone knowledge base... Like when one of us calls and gets one step further, we can go document exactly what happened over the phone, who we spoke to, what they said, if they're a manager or w/e what their number is, and so on.

And with a full website of info, we might be able to hand it to the press on a silver platter and possibly make a really big deal about it. It would be nice to get the news involved, that Dell is selling faulty laptops. It was bad enough before but now that Dell has been ignoring us so long, and then they mark our months of collective info with an "accepted answer" that just happens to be the newest post, it really makes me mad.

I'll begin on the site, hopefully have it done in a week or two (I'm a busy high school student!), and at the very least it would save newcomers from having to read our many pages of discussion, by having info and possible solutions. I was also thinking about having a poll that says whether it worked or not, but I might make the poll invite-only and then hand invites to only the posters in this thread, to prevent spam and fake responses... I dunno. I'll figure it out.
If anyone has any other ideas or comments on this or whatever, speak up!

Why Dell marked this as solved I can only guess.

Per the "Accepted Solutions FAQ" only the original poster "hovaslash" or a Dell Community Liaison can mark an answer as a solution. "hovaslash" has not logged in since 7-16 of 2007.

What was marked is in no way a solution since the poster states "Anyway, I still think it's a driver conflict issue" and "I really hope they'll finally find a fix for this problem".

I'm about to send some letters to the state and federal people on this. What a slap in the face after years of smoke and bait....

All:

I'm not sure why the thread was marked solved. As AEV pointed out, only the original posted and/or a Moderator can change the status. As the feature is still new, there may be a bug. That said, I've now corrected the status.

There are a couple issues at play here, the least of which is that this thread was originally started in regards to the "popping/skipping of ripped files", and had been resolved according to the reply from the original poster. Since that time however, other users have posted various issues with multiple laptop models. Some of these issues were able to be fixed with the steps provided by other users in this thread, however some users continue to see problems. Unfortunately, the length of this thread makes it incredibly difficult to filter your specific problem and associated fix.

If you are currently experiencing sound issues and need assistance with troubleshooting, I highly recommend making a *New* post with your problem. In this post, please describe the specific issue as well as system model and operating system, so that others can provide the most effective resolution.

Ricky_C and AEV, please check your Private Messages as I'd like to collect more information on the issues you are seeing.

Thanks!
