Strange it won't work for you in XP. Mine works great in XP, but does the same thing you are running into with my Windows 2000 installation. It's starting to sound like Dell, or Lexmark who accually makes them for Dell, has a printer driver problem in the A960 (Lexmark x6170). I hope we hear an answer soon.

I looked at the Windows XP knowledge base and there was an article concerning similar error messages with Lexmark X printers, stemming from the default settings allowing the USB root hub to be turned off to save power.  I am pertty sure I had already changed this but will double check.  I am also going to try installing it on my laptop, whuch runs XP Home.

There is also a document # FA1016572
that discusses USB problems. I tried what is suggested ("reawakening" the USB ports) and it did no me no good.

At least after hearing you were getting the same thing in XP, I decided the problem is not a Windows 2000 problem and I didn't try an upgrade to XP like I was starting to think of doing.

What document were you looking at about the USB sleep problem?

Had anyone tried printing photo quality pictures from the A960?  I am looking at getting this all-in-one, but I want to make sure it truly does print good pictures.

Well, the MS web link didn't do anything for me. What I really find amazing is I haven't heard anything from the Dell Tech Support since Saturday morning. I think we hit upon a real probelm here.

I installed the Dell A960 on my laptop this morning.  Unlike my desktop (XP Professional) my lowly laptop only ran XP Home edition. Imagine my (lack of) surprise when the A960 worked fine on the laptop.  I am going to try uninstalling XP Pro this weekend because It hink it has been causing me other communications problem with my network that I do not experience with my laptop.  I'll let you know what happens.

Does anyone know which USB is supported by this printer? I.x or 2.x or both? I'm assuming this is not the problem, but I was asked this question, and I'm not at home with the manual. And, I do not seem to be able to find this information on this web site.

I was asked what did the event viewer show? Event viewer? What event viewer? :-} Never thought about looking at that. In the analyzing of the error messages, searching through Microsoft's knowledge base, and beating my head against the wall, I think I found the reason for the problem. It sure appears like everything I was looking at was pointing to a problem with Windows 2000's service pack 4.

Have you ever tried to remove a service pack? I don't care what they say about archiving the files for the service pack upgrade, they aren't any good after you've done a number of other things since that service pack install. I had to finally give up and do a fresh reinstall of Windows 2000.

I no sooner reinstalled Windows 2000 and the printer started working just fine. I have reinstalled service pack 3 and all is well. I will NOT even attempt to reinstall service pack 4 at this time.

What was in SP4 that would cause this problem, I don't know. But this also made me remember that I didn't install the latest service pack for Windows XP and the printer works fine there also. Had you possibly installed the latest and "greatest" WinXP service pack onto your PC??? This could also be your problem.

Food for thought.

I already had SP4 installed before I installed the A960 software and I had no problems.  Also, I have an XP SP1 machine using the A960 as a network printer, and there are no problems there either.  SP1 was installed again, prior to installing the A960 drivers.

I am pretty happy with the A960.  I actually bought it for scanning and faxing; as I have a photo quality printer.  After much testing I realized the A960 was doing better photo printing than my older printer (HP970).

The only thing I didn't like was some darker photos scanned in a little darker than they should have.    Correctly lit photos scan in just fine.  Faxing is fine, and as an extra I was able to daisychain an answering machine to the system.  I set the A960 to pick up fax on hearing a fax tone.  This allows calls to go to the answering machine, the A960 picks up if it hears a fax tone and disconnects the answering machine; otherwise the answering machine takes the call.

Very pleased with the A960.  (And the refill cartridges are priced the same as any other manufacturer, I am not sure why people are complaining.)

Complaining? Who's complaining? The A960 does a beautiful job. It's just that after installing it on my Windows 2000 computer I had to reinstall the OS. Now it works great. I'm not complaining.

This thread was to resolve a problem, which we did.

I second that.  I only mentioned that I had no problems installing the drivers on W2k SP4 and XP SP1.  That is true, however I didn't say how much I liked this unit.  It works great, and I must admit after reading about some of the problems people have been having with some of the Dell printers, I was hesatant to buy one.

Thank goodness that this thing works great - I wouldn't want to have to deal with Tech support...

Well, I still have not resolved my issue. Is there any reason why the A960 should not work with XP Professional edition?  I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, changed USB ports, removed other printers, chanted mystic spells, and nothing.  Unlike you lucky fellows, looks like I am going to have to deal with Dell's tech support. If I don't come out in 3 days . . . .

I just hope you don't have to go what I went through, reinstalling the O.S. Once that Registry is gone, which is what happens, then it's back to reinstalling almost everything else too.
