Same problem. Mine says "not plugged in" and I also don't have any sound coming from the speakers. All I installed were the drivers for my Logitec cam, wireless mouse and keyboard. The rest is Office 2007 after a clean install. This is irritating.

I had the same problem.  You are using the wrong driver.  Make sure you have the one for the sigmatel portable that shows the 3 jacks and gives you the ability to configure them.

Thanks for your reply. Which sigmatel driver are you talking about? Could you please post the link to the driver?

The technical support guys told me that the second socket is actually for the 'surround sound' so it won't work unless the laptop is configured for surround sound. I doubt if this is correct.

In normal situations, if two persons want to listen to a song, they'd just plugin their headphones into two sockets and each one should hear the song.
