The failure to startup is not caused by a bad battery. It could be failed AC adapter - make sure the LED on it is ON. If it's not, replace it. If it is, the next most likely cause is a loose or faulty DC charger board. Reseat, and if that doesn't work, replace it. It may be you need to do a BIOS update to use a newer battery, which is what the CD is for. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latc840/en/sm/battch.htm#1084976 If the DC power board and adapter are OK, the last possible cause is a faulty system board.
Thanks for answering. Ok, the light on the charger is on (green). The light on the Lap Top blinks and changes color between green and red instead to stay in green (it started to do that a few weeks ago and I do not know what it means). So you say I should reseat, reseat what and how I can do it? How can I update the BIOS if I can not turn on the machine?. Thanks again!!!! best regards, Michael.
Thanks again. The machine did not start up without the battery. What do you mean with reseat the part, how I reseat it? I already followed the steps and disassembled the machine until get to the part and assembled it again but nothing happened, the problem continued. There is a curious thing, when I connect the DC cable to the machine with the battery connected the battery led on the machine blinks green and red (green one time and red 4 times) and when I connect the DC cable without the battery connected the battery led on the machine did not get on. Regards.

If that doesn't do it, the next step is to replace that part.
Still nothing? The system board is the next most likely faulty part.
