As ky331 says, there is no need to pay for AntiVir.

I recommend Avira's free AntiVir over avast solely on published detction rates. I'm always a bit leery in trusting tests from single sources, but AntiVir does seem to consistently top the competition. In practice I have tried both;  and both are user-friendly. Both do the job well, and I have no hesitation in recommending either. Currently, I have AntiVir on my PC.

For various reasons, I consider AVG Free a distant third choice.

Avira/Antivir should be FREE (for home use):

Avira/AntiVir Personal Edition  ( Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP ):

forum member Joe53 rates it above both avg and avast...
see my 2nd post, and Joe53's follow-up footnote, in the following thread:

I like Avast home and it's free.

I found the AntiVir--Avira free program---Downloaded and installed it. The license shows that it expires on 5/31/07. There is a comment that it will automatically be prolonged about 4 weeks before expiration. Does that mean that it will continue as a free program and not become expired.

From everything I've read, it seems that the AntiVir licence will renew itself. I've seen nothing to indicate that the free version is time-limited in any way.

... or for 12 months- whichever comes first. :smileywink:

"avast! 4 Home Edition works for 60 days after the installation in demo mode. You will obtain your FREE license key by E-mail after the registration. The license key is valid for 1 year. After one year you will need to just re-register."

I have Avira on my Dell Dimension desktop now and decided to install it on my laptop as well. I'm impressed with how it operates and has helped clear up a virus I have had on my Dimension desktop for a while which my Panda Program didn't touch.
