I have another more serious issue going on with my OS (virus probably), so I have to deal with that first.  However, my issue with Suspend mode and the ac adaptor sounds the same as yours (i.e. lights, etc.).  I too am running the Intel card and not the Broadcomm.

Exact same thing happened to me when I was first playing with my I8600 (got it new about a week ago). I've avoided doing it again so I can't say for sure it happens every time but my gut says it would.

I'm not sure if I'm having the same problem - it seems to happen when the system is plugged (I know) and possibly unplugged.  Essentially, if I close the lid and open it after it suspends, I turn it on and it powers up, but the screen stays black (I don't even see any backlighting).  The same thing occassionally happens if it suspends while the lid is open from disuse and I try to bring it out of suspend mode.

Oh - I'm not currently using Dell Quickset.

It has happened two more times.  As mentioned earlier, when I plug the computer in, the three lights (Cpas Lock, etc) light up for a few seconds before the computer shuts down.  This is obviously happening A LOT, so when is Dell going to help us out?

I just thought of something else.

If your windows settings are standby when plugged in and hibernate when running off the battery, could this cause a problem when you plug the computer in after it has already gone to sleep?

February 1st, 2004 12:00

I am having the same problem.

8600 1.6ghz
512meg ram
80gig hd
dvd writer
15" 1680X1050 res.

It does not happen every time I ue the laptop. However, I think I remember it happening if I shut the lid with it unpluged and then plug it in. Then, when I open it later, it does not turn back on and I end up having to hold done the power button to shut it off and then press the power button again to turn it on.

I have changed the setting to Hybernate when the lid is shut instead of sleep. I will let you know if this temporarily fixes the problem. Although, like someone already mentioned, it does take longer for the computer to turn back on

I have tried opening and closing the lid using different combinations of having the commputer plugged in or running of battery etc. and is seems to work fine.

I have set it to hybernate instead of standby. It actually only takes 10sec for the computer to startup from hibernation mode.

Seems like the solution to me. I will let you know if the problem occurs in the near future.

Here are the instructions for using Hibernation instead of Standby for Windows XP Home
1) Right Click on the Desktop
2) Click on the Screen Saver Tab
3) Click on Power
4) Click on the Advanced Tab
5) In the Power buttons section you can change the setting for "When I close the lid of my portable computer"," When I press the power button on my computer", and "When I press the sleep button on my computer". I only changed the when I close the lid setting to Hibernate.

Also, If you then click on the Power Schemes Tab, you can change the system to never standby when using eigher the battery or plugged in and then set the amount of time before the system hybernates to your personal preference. This way, the system will never use sandby. I will post again if I have any trouble with these settings.

Cheers

The 26jan04 A04 bios doesn't fix the problem.

I was hoping that the readme's description of battery and power management changes might mean that our plug-in-and-halt bug was being addressed.

But no luck. To make matters worse the bug doesn't happen 100% of the time. After upgrading the bios I tried adding and removing power while in suspend. It stayed asleep 3 times in a row. Unfortunately on the fourth try back to reset-when-you-plug-in.

BobT

Are you going to address this?  A lot of us are having this issue and switching to hibernate mode is not the answer.  It's clearly a bios issue that has persisted from A00 on.

I've had phone support try to debug this with no luck.  It was supposed to be elevated to a higher level, but nothing happened.  What a shock.

Thanks

Rob

PS- Can you imagine how difficult it is when my laptop hibernates during a meeting?  It takes 5 minutes to get back to where I was.

Hello,

Problem Description/Symptom:

Operating system (Windows XP Pro SP1 - se system description below for more detail) restarts by itself each time computer has been in the Standby mode and recovers from it. This error occurs approximately 5-30 minutes after coming back from StandBy mode. Each time it's random time and place.

What also happens is that when computer recovers from StandBy Mode, mouse process is functionning well, but I am unable to double-click/start/run anything else. Everything just freezes except the mouse.

This problem has occured since the day 1 we received computer from Dell.

Then, computer is running on battery power and not auxilary power AC/DC.
I have also tried to run on auxilary power AC/DC and then remove it before going to StandBy mode.
I tried taking out the battery, and running on AC/DC, going to StandBy and comming back from StandBy, but the error persists.

Sometimes XP just restarts automatically, and sometimes, not.
XP is configured that each time an seriuos error occurs in the OS (hardware or software related) that XP automatically restarts.
This can be turned off by going to: My Computer (right-click) -> System Properies -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery and uncheck the box Automatically restart. What happens later is that when error occurs it can be read on the screen if possible.

In my case sometimes the system just stops responding and sometimes it restarts.
When system stops responding, you can move mouse around, but all other processes in the OS are dead.
You are unable to do anything/start/run.

I must ShutDown computer manually then. CTRL+ALT+DEL process is also dead.

Next time I am booting into XP i receive this message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.

Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

This message tells/means that Registry library/file is destroyed.

After this it's impossible to recover the OS by booting with Last good known configuration or running
autorepair.
I have to re-install Operating System each time. FRUSTRATING !!!

Tried Solutions without any help:

I have checked for drivers on the system, conflicts, none.
Updated all system/hardware drivers. Nothing helps.
Updated BIOS to A04 and Reseting BIOS as Dells support techinican recommended. No Help.
Re-installing the operating system and installing all the latest drivers from Dells website.
Dell has chanced and replaced Harddrive, but ofcourse, that wasn't the issue. Symptoms persist.
Installing Linux SuSE 9.0, and symptoms are similar. In SuSe as soon computer has been in StandBy mode, it is unable to recover from StandBy mode.

Possible Cause:

CPU Overheating problems
Device Drivers are causing the conflict in the Operating System
Graphic Card related issues
ACPI management related issues
Other hardware related issues

If you are familiar with this problem please let me know.

In contact with Dell:

Dell doesn't know what is causing this problem.
I have requested to return my computer since it hasn't functioned since the day 1 and Dell FAILED to repair it and doesn't know
what's casing the error/s / problems.

Other issues:

I have been receiveing other type of error before, but they dissapeared for some reason.

Memory Errors / Device Errors such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA, Stop: 0x00000050 or IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, Stop: 0x0000000A
Registry Errors such as  Win32k.sys Adress BF8D97A5 base at BF800000, STOP: 0x0000008E

Those error are currently not occuring for some reason.

Thank you in advance for taking your time!

I'm also having the problem that many other people seem to be having, where my Inspiron 8600 isn't correctly coming back from a standby.

One thing that I don't think I've seen mentioned in this thread so far is that I can actually make the thing hibernate and then come back from hibernation.

The scenario:

Suspend.  That seems to work correctly.  Press the power button to come back from suspend.  The disc spins, the green light comes on, but the screen stays black.  Hit some keys, move the mouse, still get nothing.  Hold down the Fn key along with the esc/suspend key, and the screen comes to life, I get the standard Windows screen about going into hibernation, and the machine seems to hibernate correctly.  Hit the power screen to come back from hibernation and everything is just fine.

I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP2, and this is a brand-new reinstall of XP Pro.

Well, I just switched the laptop from W2K to XP sp2. Did it fix the problem with the system shutting down when I plug in the power suppy while suspended? NO!!! Told ya, Dell BobT.

A co-worker just got an 8600 and his won't do this. I'm up to A11 bios and all the latest drivers. Can anyone fix this issue? I've lost open files from this and using hibernate instead of suspend was a pita.

Dell? Any ideas? This is being reviewed in the US, right?

It's working again on my XP Pro system.

I wish I could tell you what fixed it.

You might try installing the Dell nvidia drivers a few times; reinstalling them once didn't solve the problem, but I did run through several cycles of video install/reinstalls.

Since I have no idea what caused the problem, or how I solved it, it's a fair assumption that it's going to reoccur.

Dell really needs to come up with a decent way to diagnose the problem.  A complete OS reinstall was _not_ the solution; I had the problem on a virgin system.
