I think I would try to absolutely determine the type of card first. There's 2 easy ways to do it.

1.  Look at the Device Manager, you should have an Unknown device for your Wifi card.  Double click, go to the Details tab, select Hardware Ids.  Copy/Paste one of the values into Google, you'll usually get a few hits with the brand/model of your device.
2.  OR,  remove the keyboard and look at the model number on the card.  You'll need a small phillips screwdriver.  Lean the screen as far back as it will go.  Carefully pop off the long plastic cover above the keyboard.  Unscrew the 3 or 4 screws holding the edge of the keyboard down, and lift the keyboard up to see the Wifi card.  The brand/model is printed right on top.

As for the drivers, make sure you reboot between installs/uninstalls, even if it doesn't ask you to do so.  Uninstall your [bad] Wifi drivers, reboot, install the [good] driver, reboot, test.

Since you have some connectivity to the web you can find which wireless card you have by entering the Service Tag of the Inspiron 6000 here and then click go. Once you are on the page with your Inspiron 6000 showing look just below the picture and there are 3 tabs the last one is titled

Technical Support Tools. You will then see a link that says Check My System Configuration. When you click this link it will ask you to agree or not. Go ahead and agree and then you'll see a page with 3 tabs and one will say Original Configuration. This will show all the devices originally on the system.

Also the PCMCIA Smart Card controller on this system is native to XP. The list that is posted at the top that I believe you are using is designed so that it is a reference for all systems. Some systems need an additional driver others do not. Yours is one that does not need the additional driver.
