Be more specific!

Use ethernet cables to connect computers, and then set up a home or small network connectionon both computers, and have the same workgroup on the computers. Just go to network connections in control panel, and on network tasks to the right press the set up a home or small office network, and follow the instructions!

But I don't know really, what you want, so be more specific!

The best and fastest connection would be w peer to peer connection using a network cable.

Check here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/p2pintro.mspx  and  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/150575 It says Macintosh but it doesn't matter the concept is the same.

Google for peer to peer connections, lots of results:

You are absolutely correct, sir... I was just assuming they didn't own a switch or router and probably didn't want to purchase additional hardware. ( based on his topic title and he is looking at the files and transfer wizard ).

Good Call..

Actually, a switch/router with reguarl CAT 5 cables from each machine would be easier than connecting the two together.

On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic

Thinking ahead of the curve usually gets me in trouble.  Now, if the OP has two comuters they now have a network waiting to happen.  Providing they have broadband, the router is the best choice and the old machine could be used as a filer server.

OK- Router seems to be best for a server filer. I have just tried the rs232 cables,, while it will work ,,it not as efficient as I can already see,, so router will do soon as I get one.. Any more suggestions??
