I had this problem one year ago. The headphone jack was broken like the last person said. Only works when something is plugged into it. I just had it happen to me again two days ago and of course the warranty is expired, so I need to figure something out. Having it happen two times is stupid.... By the way, I'm using an Inspiron 6000
The jack is not replaceable so the repair job means replacing the motherboard. These jacks and the way they are mounted is definitely poor engineering. Too bad you had 2 of these go bad. The solution is to get an external sound card.
To the original poster, if you are still under warranty you ought to bite the bullet and contact support again to get yours fixed. You don't have to call them; see our FAQ for different means of contact.
Thanks for your input. After posting, I restarted the computer again. The other speakers began working but now the headphones don't. It is still under warranty and I will call when I have some free time to get service! (Lots of free time).
