I have a similar situation.  I have Vista Laptop on a home network.  I have two Dell desktops, one with Dell 962 printer and one with Dell 942 printer.  Upon initial set up, neither printer was able to communicate and got the same error you did.  A lexmark laser had no problem connecting.  I upgraded the firmware on the 962 and I was able to connect and print fine from Vista.  The probelm is that there is NO firmware upgrade availalbe for the 942.  I would believe that you have the same issue with your printer.  The firmware is not included in the driver download. 
 
I contacted Dell and they wouldn't help since the printer is over one year old and out of warranty.

Well I'm glad I got this printer for free, and that is why I will never buy from dell for terrible customer service.
