i have the earphone noise on my brand new inspiron 1720, too. after googling a bit it appears to be a serious design flaw of the inspiron series, that cannot be undone easily.

This needs to be addressed by some one at Dell, I am thinking about returning my laptop because of this. It is a huge problem, just google 1520 and headphone or 1520 and whine. Also check out that post above.

I will even take a slight acknowledgment that there is some kind of issue.

Is this simply a problem of mixing an open input connection with the desired input? Did I understand correctly (from some of the posts on that other thread) that Vista doesn't offer a control panel with the ability to turn down and/or mute unused inputs to the sound card?

Trust me if it was a simple fix it wouldn't have spawn so many post across so many boards. It is either badly shielded components or the Power State changes that make modern laptops whine(which Dell needs to look into, HP released a BIOS that attempted to fix the whine).

I have discovered that my 1520 also has the dreaded noise also. If I had known about this before hand I would have purchased something else. I am searching for an answer. Will post if I find something. For 1000.00 plus. It should not have this.

your going to return a laptop becaue you get a small whine when there is no sound playing through the headphones....wow...talk about picky.....I have a brand new 1720 and I get the same whine when I have absolutly no sound playing....as soon as I start music or a game or ANYTHING I can not hear it and I don't get it through just the speakers, only with the headphones....seems stupid to return something for that.

I have the same problem on my 1505.  It is a ground-loop problem.  You can get rid of it by picking up a Ground Loop Isolator from RadioShack for about $15.  I also have a USB sound card, which eliminates this as well--it plugs into your USB port, and you can connect speakers, headphones, etc to it with a stereo plug.  You can also connect a digital audio cable for even better sound.

If you notice, you only get the noise when the laptop is plugged into outlet power.  When it is running off the battery, it goes away.

Try listening to 4+ hours of lectures with the constant snap crackle pop in the background.  Dell should be ashamed and issue a recall.  End of story.  First batteries, now this.  Lesson not learned?

I recently purchased Inspiron 1520 laptop.
Even In my Laptop i hear very annoying creaking noise (Like radio giving sound when there is no signal kind of sine wave).
This noise is there continuosly, when i am not playing music, when i am playing music, when i mute the audio, when i just keep the system idle at all times.
This noise increases when there is any process running in system.
I have sigmatel sound card installed. I noticed this first day I received the laptop from Dell. Laptop was already completely installed with latest drivers. Changes in volume or enhancements do not have any affect on this noise.
When i contacted Dell they said its static noise and its common. I am a s/w engineer and electronics student hence i know about static noise in headphones.
Its not static noise i am talking about its a creaking noise which i explained to Dell Tech Support.
Next day they sent an engineer and he replaced ear phones, audio jack and even entire mother board nothing seems to work. He just left without solving ny problem. I checked wih other laptop brands they do not have this kind of noise what so ever.
Dell speak up???

We've had a similar noise problem with TWO inspiron 1520s...we got our first one in October, noticed the creaking sound right away (the noise occurred almost all the time when the computer was on, regardless of what we were doing on it), and sent the computer back for a new one.  We didn't receive the new one until late december (last week); and unfortunately this one has the same problem.  It's not a normal sound- I've had great Dell laptops in the past and none have ever sounded like this.  I think we're going to send this one back too because the sound drives me crazy.  I don't know if we should try another Dell or go with another brand...
