Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I did remove the older driver with add/remove.  I do *not* have the new system BIOS however ... I'll try that out tonight.

Any recommendations on which Nvidia driver I should be using, and should use a modded inf file?

Thanks

I checked my BIOS and it's version A10 dated for 2003.  So upgrading that won't make a difference.

I'm confused regarding your recommendation though, at the madtoast link that I posted above, I see a 52.16 and 53.03 with associated inf files.  Where do you get the modded 53.04 or 52.07 drivers?

Thanks

Deep

Thanks vbluev,

Unfortuantely things still don't work.  I tried the detonator 52.7 version and my screen still shuts off.  Is there a setting in an inf file which I can play with to stop this?

I'm at the stage where I'm thinking it might be easier just to buy a new video card for this machine, maybe an ATI 9000 but seems like a waste considering it's not that much better a card.

Black screen issues usually arise from those with a SXGA screen or Windows attempt to output a resolution and frequency which your display doesn't like.  In some cases it may have switched to outputting the video on an external monitor so trying FN+F8 might be a solution.

I am guessing the originals that came with your laptop are version 2x.xx.  Have you tried Dells latest 44.xx?

You could try changing the INF file values to:
SoftEDID = 0;
Mobile = 1;

Though, these values are more significant on Toshiba laptops than Dell ones.

Nope, nothing worked.  Also Teraphy, I couldn't find SoftEDID = 0; Mobile = 1; in the nv4_disp.inf file for version 45.33.  I also only found dells 42.58 on this site, haven't found 44.xx and your link isn't working for me right now.

Thanks, I'll try the fn+f8 trick if the next install goes blank, else i'll try the inf mod.  I'm about to try 45.33.  Have yet to find a version newer than 27.5 that works.  Thanks all, your help is much appreciated.

I haven't been to the forums in a while, and that was a very old link.  Fixed it now, thanks for informing me :)  As for the inf edit I realized I wasn't as clear:

Add under [nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings] or edit in current location...
HKR,, SoftEDIDs,   %REG_DWORD%,    0
HKR,, Mobile,      %REG_DWORD%,    1

I see 44.68 as Dells latest I8200/440 Go driver.  It doesn't appear to be the latest located on the downloads page.. hmmm. I don't even see it on the FTP.  Guess that was a bad version.  I had it archived that's why I figured.

Teraphy,  I managed to add the lines you specified to version 44.68.  Better than a blank screen now, thanks, but it looks like it's at the wrong frequency if that makes any sense.  Lots of vertical lines at the login screen, and the login prompt in distorted and in the top left of the screen, messed up enough that you can't really log in ... reminiscent of the old days of trying to get X windows to work in linux.

Thanks for all your help, I'm guessing it really would be better just to get a new card.  VblueV, cheers too.

have you tried flashing back to your original video bios? (did you even save it when you flashed to the new one?)

also... there is a newer vid bios version A06 for the gf4go 440:

here's the version A05 you said you flashed to:

http://support.dell.com/filelib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R58975&c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=0&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=INS_PNT_P4_8200&DeviceID=2572&Type=BIOS

and here's vid bios version A04 for the gf4go 440:

http://support.dell.com/filelib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R54341&c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=0&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=INS_PNT_P4_8200&DeviceID=2572&Type=BIOS

and again, when i had my gf4go 440 in my rig... i actually liked the dell vid driver 42.58:
