If all other audio files except the transferred ones play okay, I would suspect a virus. If you want explore that possibility try posting on the Software/Virus/Spyware board. Use the Navigation box on the left to get to that board.
Unfortunately, the problem also happened before I transferred my files onto my computer, if I was listening to streaming audio from the internet, it also happened. The problem has gotten worse only after I transferred my music onto my computer, so I think it was a pre-existing problem.
You might not want to do this, but using Dell PC Restore (page 84 of your manual) will get the computer back to its original configuration when it was shipped to you. It should work perfectly at that point. If it doesn't then you probably should contact Dell. If the audio does work perfectly then you can start reloading files and programs and keep alert for when the problems start. Keep making System Restore points as you go along as you might need to go back to one.
If you want to do this, backup your files somewhere other than the hard drive. Restart and press Ctrl + F11 during the restart process and it should take you to the "PC Restore" menu. Then just restore your computer to the factory settings. Test your audio first thing after you restore your computer.
yeah, i was worried i'd have to do that. thank you for taking the time to answer my question! i'll probably do a system restore and just not put any audio files on my computer that i've transferred from my other computer.
