Chris:

Here's another screenshot with more areas for them to try. this is the room just before the one in the other shot, right when you walk into iron forge from the subway.

UPDATE:

Also a reminder, here's the 2 videos I made that show the problem, one shows the ghosting effect, and one shows the flickering effect I get on grassy terrain.

Note, the "grass effect" one may look like the camera is flickering the terrain, but that's actually the monitor doing it. They can reproduce both of the effects in the videos in Aldor Rise in shattrath city, or anywhere in Terrokar Forest itself or the Bone Wastes in Terrokar Forest.

interesting thread here. Can I ask, has anyone used a colorimeter to calibrate their screen properly (either budget like a Spyder2Express or pro like a Gretag / LaCie device)? Just wondering if this helps remove / reduce the problem at all?

MitchellD_,

Agreed. We are only seeing the issue on grey/dark backgrounds.

Chris:

Yet another really good URL for you to pass on to your team, and some excellent technical information that may help them come up with a fix.

See the last comment in the thread at:

http://www.monitorsrc.com/reviews/dell-2407wfp-hc-review/

".... This issue exhibits a black after shadow from bright spots (over 75% brightness) in dark areas (under 40% brightness), it leaves a very dark sometimes black after shadow that lasts from 100-300ms.

Basically what’s happening is that after a bright pixels trys to switch to a darker colour, it overcompensates and switches to a colour that’s too dark and it takes between 100-300ms for it to settle onto the right brightness.

This means the issue is non-existent with white-to-black transitions, but white to dark grey, say RGB(64,64,64), will cause the displays pixels to switch from white to black, then to the correct grey some time later. The result is a displeasing dark shadow trailing behind bright objects moving across a dark-but-not-black background."

All,

I am currently waiting for the official response to this issue from my Displays Product Group.

Very good. Thanks Chris. Is it 100% certain that this defect is a good enough reason for the monitor to be exchanged with a new one?

All,

Concerning the moving an open Windows box around the screen, is your Display Properties- Appearance- Effects- Show window contents while dragging turned on or off? Try it both ways. Do you get the ghosting in both?

"Dell policy states that a New exchange can only be done within the initial 30 days from the invoice date. After 30 days, the exchange will be for a refurbished one. But, at this point, ANY exchange will not have the fix in it." So, I guess we've been waiting for nothing. We need the fixed ones, but after you've been telling us to "hold off on exchanging your units, I will tell you when", we can't even get one. The only way to get one is to wait for the new FIXED ones to roll into the refurb bin, that's rediculus. You told us to wait, you told us the warrantee would cover it, and now you throw this out saying it won't??? That's just peachy. -Mobious-

cheekykid,

Dell policy states that a New exchange can only be done within the initial 30 days from the invoice date. After 30 days, the exchange will be for a refurbished one. But, at this point, ANY exchange will not have the fix in it.

Chris,
No it's only when the window contents are shown.

Mobius - Chris is saying that you'll be able to get a refurbished one at no cost once there's a fix in place. Any refurbished one will have the fix in it once one is discovered.

Plus, I have a feeling this may get fixed with Firmware, if it's just a timing issue as the signs are pointing that way.. I could be wrong, but you may just be able to update the one you already have with the fix once it's discovered.

Just so Dell is aware, I've seen your monitors on some family member's machines (albeit the smaller versions) and was very impressed (as I am with overall Dell build quality given your prices).  That said, I was all set to go with the 2407-HC on my new build until I saw this issue.  I do game (wanna play BioShock along with several other darker games like F.E.A.R.), and this is definitely a concern for me.  Have a little bit of time (waiting for X38) before I actually build, so if you guys sort this out before then, you'll likely have another sale.  ^.^  And to those of you with the issue, my condolences - I'm sure it's frustrating.  Dell support should be able to sort it out, though...

One other thing.  I really think it'd be nice if your monitor firmware (as to my knowledge, it isn't) was user upgradeable (similar to updating a BIOS, if that's possible to do with a monitor connected to a PC).  It would certainly avoid the need to replace perfectly good monitors if all that needs updated is the firmware...

I'am inclined to agree with Mobious here.  Chris told us to wait for the sign before we exchange/refund and now we find out the best they can do is get us a refurb'ed monitor?!?  I'am sorry but thats ridiculous... that means we end up paying top dollar ($600) for a refurb when we all could have got another monitor which was defect free in the first place.  I think most of us here were under the impression we would get a NEW A01 monitor and NOT a refurb.  Another thing is the whole "we can't repro this issue" which is quite suspicious to me since the ghosting is so horribly easy to repro... not to mention theres multiple screenshots and videos to prove the case.  I think i'am gonna get my refund now as I expected much better from a big company like Dell.  Good luck to you all.

Chris, I tried what you suggest but nothing. The ghosting is still there and it is terrible. All screens have it but some people don't care about it/haven't noticed it. We have been waiting for nothing and now we are at Dell's mercy waiting for a fix. Once the fix is out the best we can end up with is a refurbished screen.

ChrisM, if you can find me a September revision A00 I will test it for you. I've had a July and an August already, which means 2 monitors in a row over 2 months had it, but I would like to see if a September has it. -Mobious-

Mobious, All,

We had success in the lab testing two 2407WFP-HCs. We forgot that a huge difference between the 2407WFP and the 2407WFP-HC was that we added the Contrast ability to both the VGA and the DVI of the 2407WFP-HC. Using the PixPerAn software Mobious showed us, we set the Brightness to default 50 and slowly moved the Contrast up/down (I cannot remember what was the best number) while running the F3 Chase Test. We greatly lessened the Ghosting. Everyone, start WOW and adjust your Brightness and Contrast accordingly. Please post your results.

NOTE - If you guys go through me, any exchanges will be for a New monitor regardless of days outside of 30. We are not yet ready to start these exchanges.
