push the blank in and then push the button in as far as it will go and it will snap close.

I have the same problem - a brand new inspiron 1720, and I was investigating it's features, and made the mistake of pushing the ExpressCard release button. The blanking plate comes out, so I push it back in with no problem - but then realise that the ExpressCard release button won't go back in. now i have a small plastic protrusion from the side of my new laptop that doesn't click back in when pushed, and it catches on my sleeve when i type - the spring just pushes it back out when i push it in, and there's no click, or catch, when it goes in. I have tried pushing it in before or after the blank plastic slot, but no joy.

any help GREATLY appreciated!

You have to push the blank in about 1/4 of an inch further into the slot for it to catch.
