I tried this procedure already before posting, but i tried it again after u post just to be sure...
No, it doesn't work!!!!
it installs the software but ends without telling anything... When i reboot Sigmatel software starts but ends telling me that the software isn't compatible with the hardware...
This is why i asked if all the vostro 1700 are the same... it seems that this procedure works on some models and doesn't work with others...
One potential problem is that before installing the chipset driver, you are supposed to first install Dell Notebook System Software, but Dell doesn't have an XP version for the v1700. I don't know if the other 1700 owners were
a. using the Vista version of NSS for the v1700
b. using the XP NSS from the Vostro 1500 which also uses the R158235 driver
c. just not installing NSS at all.
Try going back to one of the threads where someone successfully used the R158235 on a v1700 and ask how they handled the NSS issue. If no answer try "b" above.
Glad that you got one to work, even though it's weird that it's a Dimension Desktop driver instead of one of the notebook ones. Did you install any NSS or Chipset driver?
I got a post from another V1700 owner who said he/she got this XP driver to work:
I installed that drive because it was the same revision of the one for the vostro 1700 for Vista. If u look under the section for vista of the 1700 u can see that the driver is Stac 92xx 6.x.x REV A05 I searched for the stac 92xx 5.x.x A05 and i found that driver... when i installed it, it recognize the periferals but didn't install the drivers to working properly, so i downloaded the vostro 1500 drivers and pointed manually to them. Sorry for my english, hoping you understood :D
1) Install windows with sata drivers
2) Install R153997
3) Install R141246
4) Install R114282
5) After reboot in the periferals you'll find an Unknown PCI Device or something like that with the yellow exclamation point -----> Delete it
6) Install R153908
7) If it still doesn't work go in the periferals and reinstall drivers for the audio periferals, pointing in the folder: c:\dell\r153908\wdm
8) Repeat point 7 for all the Audio periferals that doesnt work EXEPT the modem
9) Install R164255
10) Install R154493
11) Install R155105
12) Install R155653
13) Install R147115 (This should fix also the modem audio problem)
14) Install R161378
15) Install R165094
This is EXACTLY the way i installed ALL the Windows XP
Finally the R161378 driver (bluetooth) did the trick for me ..
I saw it in your list and I didn't have it installed, so I did it, and then ... everything was ok, I could install the R153908 and finally made the audio work !!!
anyway thanks a lot !!
but hey dell where's the link between audio and bluetooth ? :)
I've been trying for days now to install R141246.exe as directed by Dell Support. I was told it might take some time but I let it run for 35 mins the first time, then one hour, then nearly an hour and a half. It gets as far as the "Searching for Drivers" part and goes no further.
I have another problem that I feel may be related. Any time (for the last few months) that I go to "Add New Hardware" my computer tells me that other hardware is being installed and 'll have to wait until it is finished before I can add more hardware. I have no idea what this hardware might be.
Does any of this sound familiar & do you have any recommendations?

Install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (click the + sign next to Chipset) on this page:
link
Then install the Sigmatel audio driver. This is the one forum members have reported as working on the Vostro 1700:
R158235
