You are right. It clearly says:

I imagine it means that surround sound can be outputted to a decoder by using the s/pdif output with the adapter (dongle) that you have to buy separately. If that is indeed what Dell means by "7.1 channel stereo sound" then they should just say it. In that case, one would connect the speakers to the decoder.
