Problem LCD display on Dell Inspiron 6000

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, on which my OS is Windows XP Professional.  Recently, when booting my computer, the lcd has failed to show a picture.  I find that tapping (or occasionally) banging on the palm rest makes the picture appear.  This problem only occurs if I turn my computer off, and close the lid, and then turn it on later.  If the lid is left open between shutdown and turning on again the picture comes up.   I opened up the LCD and the connection under the keyboard, and there are no obvious loose connections.  I read somewhere that this may be a problem with the reed switch and related to the lid close detection.  I don't think this is an LCD hardware problem.   I would be grateful for any ideas.   PS I have not taken apart the palm rest - is this the next step?   Regards ames

Attach an external monitor. If it is an cutoff switch problem, when the notebook goes dark, the external display will as well. If that happens, it could be the switch, or it could be a mainboard problem.

If the external monitor stays on when the internal cuts off, it is a display issue.

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I switched the laptop off, closed the lid, and left it for a while.  I then connected it to my external monitor.   When I started the computer again, the external monitor came on, but the laptop one didn't.  Looking at graphics properties, my laptop was not acknowledging the laptop monitor.... until I flicked on the palm rest a couple of times.   What does this mean - and what would I be looking at financially to deal with the problem?   Regards
