Recap...

You have a Vista computer and a 924 printer.

How is the printer connected to the computer?

It's connected with a USB cable and a power cord.  It has worked fine all this time, now al lof a sudden, it will not scan.  The AIO screen comes up, but when I try to scan I get message, that says make sure power is on, connect USB and ower cord. Have done this many times, but still will not scan.  I can still print and copy.

You tried the re-installing like I suggested before? You have Vista, so you need to run the patch to completely remove the printer.

I also suggested the FREE OCR program, did you try this?

Other option is...

In the device manager, USB Root Hubs, right click on each, left click properties, then click on power management. Uncheck the box...

Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Try using 7Zip to unzip the patch. The patch has a self extractor and should open if you double click on it.

I tried running the patch, but get a block win zip.  I have WinZip Self Extractor, but it will not unzip  the file.  I did not try the Free OCR.  Will that affect anything else on my computer?  Wasn't sure if there would be a conflict with anything.

I am afraid to go into Root HUbs and stuff like that since I don't know anything about those files.

There are a lot of choices on 7ZIP.  Which one do I use?

Use the .exe download.

I tried downloading the Free OCR progam.  It scans my pictures, but could not find a place to save the picture.  Also the scan was very blurry.

I stand corrected. Read page 24 of the 924 manual.

Morty,

Make a system restore point, first.

With your clues, did you...

How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems

Try using the instructions located at...

Dell 924 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Make sure to disconnect the printer, download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Install the proper XP drivers. You'll get prompted to connect your printer(powered on)

I had the same problem after foolishly downloading a Windows (XP) hardware update to my Dell 924 AIO. I later downloaded an update from Dell (_G11AWeb32924EN.exe), which got the printer working, but not the scanner. (Only after I rebooted and unplugged and restarted the printer to allow my PC to recognize it. Plug and pray).

I finally got the AIO program going, but could not get it to scan. I kept getting the same error messageTried plugging and unplugging the USB cord, the power supply and rebooting.

I went searching again and found your suggestion. So I tried it and found that Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras had the Dell listed. I double clicked on the listing and it opened a scanning window. I did manage to make an urgent scan, but it was nowhere near as clear and sharp as with the Dell software. Any suggestion to get teh software working again?

Thanks, Morty
