is "original system configuration" one in the same,,this looks more like parts. If this is not what I need, can you give me a little more direction ...Thanks
Ok, got it. butttttt...b4 I start, on the orig conf I dont see anything that relates to notebook sys software, however, under system utilities, i see a file, "DELL - UTILITY" applies to notebook system software, and under chipset , there is only one file/download, "intel driver" applies to "mobile chipset",,,,,am I warm , or still cold. :-), good thing Im off today.
You need the audio, chipset, communication, mouse and keyboard, system utilities, and video drivers. For most, there is only one driver.
You'll need to identify your wireless card and your video card from the original configuration listing to download the proper driver - those aren't the same from system to system.
You need the notebook system software (under system) and chipset driver (under chipset) BEFORE you load any of the other drivers.
I dont see anything on my orig system config. that would indicate the hardware for my audio/ video/ ethernet controller. If I reveiw for example the video downloads there are 4, ati driver, emuzed driver , intel driver, & sonic patch upgrade. I dont see any verbiage on sys orig conf that mentions anything about , video , audio ,,or for example the 3 drivers i listed. what am i doing wrong?
Install this first:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&deviceid=3601&libid=7&releaseid=R120775&vercnt=3&formatcnt=0&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1
Then install this:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&deviceid=1134&libid=27&releaseid=R114079&vercnt=2&formatcnt=0&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1
i went with intel, and the ? mark went away, but i still have ? mark in front of video controller. Im also puzzled because I still cant connect to internet, via external modem, or router, or wireless card i bought seperate. Logically I wouldnt think the internal modem or video controll would have anything to do with lan/internet. any more suggestions.
audio, video etc are working,,only "other devices" with question marks are modem and video game controller. I really dont care about the modem, and not sure what I need video game controller. But internet/broadman via cable still is not working, I asked timewarner to send me the resource cd for external model. But should my linksys wireless card via usb, which I loaded, work? In the tool bar, rather connected via externa modem, or wireless card. It normally sez cant renew ip address, no connectivity.
Im starting to think there is something physically wrong with lap top, because when one of the usb slots, if I plug something in, the whole lap top shuts off.
I heard only dell can work on lap top , is that true?
I so happy ,,,its up ,,including wireless internet. However, after loading Norton interent security, running scan, found adware, removed most, but 4 failed. Went up on internet to find solutions, all was ok, but kept getting 2,3,4, internet openning with advertisment, not pop ups. Manually removed two adware, which helped, but still get 1 or 2 internets openning in addition to the internet i opened. I ran norton again, have ezula adware that norton cant remove, and removal tools I found are not working. Im ready to buy new security software, but not sure if that will fix. I have another lap top that shortly will need new security software, would prefer to buy new security software i can load on both....thanks again...thou this adware is a pain,,,Im still please, was ready to toss it.,,,Any suggestions

The notebook system software
The chipset driver
Then the audio, video, network, wireless, touchpad, and modem drivers.
You can make a list of the original hardware at support.dell.com (enter your service tag number and choose Original Configuration).
You MUST install the first two drivers BEFORE you install any of the others. Without them, even the correct driver will not load.

You will still have to figure out which video you have (Intel or ATI) from the orignal configuration list, along with which wireless card.

You may have to remove the cover from the modem card on the bottom of the machine to figure out which modem you have.
