I'm experiencing the exact same issues with my D620.  I was running Windows XP with no issues, rebuilt with Vista SP1, and the isssssssssssssues you describe started happening to me about three days after the rebuild.  I've tried new a docking station, new mouse, new keyboard, new motherboard(!), and like Mike it works just fine when it's undocked.  Does anyone have any clue what's causing this?

FYI...I've been in IT for years so I'm not new to this game.  This is my 2nd attempt with Vista on my production machine.  I'm about go back to XP...again.

I got fed up and reinstalled vista.  For other reasons I went x64 this time.  The problem is gone.  This time I didn't install the intel chipset from dell's web site (just left it off).

Its not truly a scientific test, as I went to 64 but i'm convinced it was bad usb/chipset drivers one way or another.

When did yours start acting up?  Mine worked for about five days and then the USB devices started dropping offline.  I can actually watch the mouse power down and back up.  Did you go back to XP?

Well, there's at least 3 of us!

Microsoft said someone else called in with this issue:

Let me know if a reinstall works for you.  interesting you didn't install the chipset.  I thought possibly a bad hardware at first, but it works fine now.  so i still think its a driver or software app of some sort.

This is strange because I didn’t install the chipset drivers from the Dell website until I started having this issue.  I tried downloading updated chipset drivers fro Intel’s website but that didn’t really do anything.  The Intel Core Duo T2300E processor in my D620 will not support the 64 bit version of Vista so that’s not an option for me.  I’m going to rebuild this thing once and if it comes back I’m going to XP.  I find it hard to believe that this has only affected the two of us.

I had the exact same issue, until I plugged the keyboard and the mouse directly into the laptop and not into the docking station or into any usb hub. I couldn't even plug the mouse into the usb port on the keyboard.

I don't have a solution to the problem, but at least now I can type withoutttttttttttttttttttttt that happening.

I tried rebuilding my machine with Vista 32 bit and SP1 but the issue came back.  The mouse was jittery and the keyboard kept falling offline.  Since 64 bit Vista is not an option for my D620 I was left with returning to XP...again.  This is a typical problem where Dell says it's Microsoft's issue and Microsoft say it's Dell's issue.  Who loses?  The user as usual.

I too need to update.

My keyboard that has a built-in hub doesn't work, even if nothing is plugged into the hub.

Me thinks that's because the USB hub internally plugs the keyboard into it through that. Even if nothing is plugged into the hub, other than the keyboard, it still stuttttttttttttttters.

So... no USB hub-ed keyboards, including the Apple Aluminum keyboard. When I get in tomorrow, I'll post my findings on removing the USB controller and re-installing it.

I posted this in General Hardware, but thought I'd put it here. Sorry for the double post...

I tried some new things today, but no luck:

I uninstalled the driver for all USB hardware.

Rebooted.

I reinstalled the Notebook System Software.

Rebooted.

I reinstalled the Intel Chipset Driver.

Rebooted.

Result:

No change.

I couldn't figure out how to stop Vista from reinstallling the USB ports immediately after telling it to uninstal them. Maybe I should dissable them from bios and try again.

Also, reinstalling the Chipset driver took 0 seconds, which makes me think that it's not doing anything at all. There's no entry to add/remove them, so I'm not sure how to really reinstall the Chipse driver.

Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

I also have the same issues with my D620.  Somewhere after my upgrade to SP1 of Vista Biz edition, I started to see keyboard repeat run-on, mouse jittering (or freezing for up to 20 seconds), and anything connected to USB thru my port replicator failing in some way.  For example my headphones are USB and when the mouse jitter would start, the audio would quit.  I never experienced these issues when I was out of the port replicator.  As a minor workaround, and a way to test this theory, I plugged mouse/keyboard/headphones into the laptop's 2 exposed USB ports, and the issues related to whatever is plugged in directly goes away.

It would be great if there was a driver or even a new type of port replicator that would solve this.

I'm glad to see this isn't a few isolated cases that will be ignored.  Until Dell or Microsoft addresses this issue I don't see my company moving forward with Vista.  The solutions I've seen so far are not acceptable fixes.  I know this is a driver issue but I'm not seeing anyone in Dell or Microsoft take an interest.

FYI...it's not related to Vista SP1 because it did it before and after SP1.

Yup. this is a big show stopper for our company as well. Frankly, it's a black mark on Dell and on Microsoft, two companies that I've always been very pleased with. Hopefully there will be a new driver soon... sigh.

BTW: I too  have had the problem pre and post SP1 on Vista.

Holy moly! It appears that the problem has gone away!

I'm going to credit... Tuesdays updates from Microsoft, although I'm not sure.  Nothing in the list seems remotely related to USB hubs.

I can tell you that I have not uninstalled, installed, or otherwise modified my system. I can also tell you that the problem is for sure gone. My sure-fire test is:

Open Adobe Acrobat and a big file. Scroll the mouse up and down using the track pad. Watch the light on the wireless transmitter for my Microsoft Keyboard. If it the function light flickers, it's broken.

Test two is to plug my Apple Keyboard (which has a built-in hub) into my docking station (which is a hub). This hub on hub set up makes the keyboard fail terribly. Right now, I'm typing on that setup and there is no way that this would have worked in the past.

I wish I had more info for all, but I don't!

Well it looks like I'm going to again (sigh) going to have to give Vista a try.  Are you sure nothing else changed?  Have you been living with this issue?
