LCD monitor is green, then blue, blank

Question

I have a Dimension desktop about 4 years old.  Monitor is off brand about the same age.  I'm running Windows XP.  When I got on today, the icons and letters on the screen were very large.  I figured one of the kids had installed something and the monitor settings had been changed.  I tried to reset them but no matter what I changed them to, they reverted back to the lowest resolution and number of colors (640x480, 16 bit color?).  I tried to restart the computer but got the same thing.  Then I powered off and when I turn the monitor on, I could see things like xxx Hz and the no signal warning.  When I turn the computer back on, I would see the Dell logo, then Windows, then it goes to a full screen green (non-uniform) and then it changes to blue, and then just random blue 'blocks'. Any idea where to start? thanks

It seems like your video adapter drivers got hosed. Check them by right clickin on the backgound of your desktop. click on properties, then settings, advanced and then adapter. You may want to try rolling back driver.

I plugged in another monitor and it works fine. Retry the original monitor and it starts out OK put the screen is kind of pixilating. I try to adjust resolution and it goes random again. Replug in the spare monitor and it works fine again.

do monitors stop working like that?

Monitors do go quickly. In the display settings, what is your monitor identified as? Usually for lcd's you need to keep the refresh at 60 hz. Check you monitor specs and make sure they are ok. A crt will run at a higher freq. Which model/brand is the monitor?
