Thanks for your reply. I have an ethernet connection. Yes, the status light near the ethernet connection is on and periodically flashes. It runs Windows XP Home edition, without the SP2 pack. I have the high speed DSL internet. I apologize that I didn't clarify that. Thank you for any help you can offer.
I will try what you suggested. However, forgive me for sounding like a dummy, but can you please clarify for me how to obtain the ipconfig/all results you are requesting?
Network adapters are listed, no yellow ? or red X. Status reports "device working properly" Please let me know on the ipconfig/all results and how to obtain them that I asked in my previous post.
I connected my laptop to the modem and turned it on and tried again to access the internet with no luck. I ran the ipconfig/all command and this is what I got:
Primary DNS suffix.................
Node type...........................Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled................No
WINS Proxy Enabled..............No
Ethernet adapter local area connection:
Media State.........................Disconnected
Description...........................Broadcom 440X 10/100 Integrated Controller
Physical address....................00-0F-1F-10-AD-27
I tried the http://192.168.1.1 link as well as typing it into my browser and could not access. The message I received was that I kept timing out because the server was taking too long to respond.
No, I did it corrrectly because I typed the exact same thing into my PC (no spaces) as I did my laptop for comparison and I did get way more info on my PC than my laptop. Definitely something wrong. What could account for the lack of info?
Let me back up a minute. I answered that post too early this morning. The 169.254.x.x address is a private address reserved for Microsoft. When this addressed is used, it means the machine/adpater cannot find a valid DHCP server, i.e., your router.
Use an ethernet cable to connect to the router and see if the laptop can connect to the outside world. If so, we now the problme is with the wireless adapter.
Either way, I would like to see an ipconfig /all from the wired side also.
I do not connect to the internet by wireless, if by the term router you are referring to a wireless connection. I just use an ethernet cable to the modem. I do not have a router. I'm really hoping that can be "fixed".

If the lights are on and one blinks that is good. Looks like the NIC is working..
open Device manager and look under the network tab and ensure that the Nic is listed and not with a yello ? or red X.
Then do as jmwills suggested and post your ipconfig /all results...

"how to obtain results for IPCONFIG /all"
click start, goto run
type cmd then click OK
you'll get a black box (command prompt)
type in there: "ipconfig /all"
then you'll get the results..

Nothing wrong with the connection to the router so I susupect the modem is not connected to the ISP. Go into the router configuration at:
http://192.168.1.1
and see if the router shows an IP Address from the ISP.
