RAM requires BIOS update?

Question

Hello,   I have an XPS 400 running Windows XP and I recently purchased some new RAM to upgrade my system. According to the service manual found at http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/parts.htm#wp1073631, it says:   NOTICE: Before you install new memory modules, download the most recent BIOS for your computer from the Dell™ Support website at support.dell.com.   My BIOS is currently running A03, and according to the Drivers and Downloads page, it says the most recent BIOS available for my system is A07. It was released on 1/16/2007, which is after my computer's manufacture date, so I assume it is in fact a correct and more recent BIOS version. Its importance is listed as 'Optional,' and it 'Improve OROM Intialization.'   Is this absolutely necessary in order to install new RAM? Can I get by without it, or might there be compatibility issues? I'm happy to download the .exe and flash it, but I've been reading a few of the critical problems other people have had after updating their BIOS. And for me, I prefer not to change or update anything in my computer, especially something as critical as BIOS, if it's not absolutely necessary. So, has anyone followed this BIOS update procedure before installing RAM, or did you just skip it? Furthermore, because it's listed as optional, perhaps my current BIOS is already reasonably up to date and sufficient?   Thanks for the help.

You shouldn't need to update your BIOS for the new RAM.  Here is a quick test:  Install the RAM without flashing the BIOS to new update and see if it works.  Sound simple enough?

Check the info for the BIOS updates after your version to see if any of them fix a problem that you have. If they don't then you probably don't need to update. And all you would need is the latest version because it includes all fixes that were in the earlier versions.

Like I said:   Plug the memory in once you recieve it without installing the BIOS update and see if it works.  That is the easiest and quickest answer you will get.   Very simple and not dangerous.  If it doesn't work, the BIOS should just halt during boot.   I like to go by the rule; if it isn't broken, don't fix it.  This applies to your BIOS most definately.
