I actually just had a pretty good chuckle just now.  I don't know if any of you noticed the sticky thread up at the top of the audio section:

Stereo Mix and Vista

Basically, they say they're going to look at Stereo Mix support for Vista, but there's 'significant challenges' in doing so.  There's two problems with that:

1) If something will work in XP compatibility mode on Vista (even drivers), then it's pretty simple to port it to Vista AND have it pass winqual.

2) If I recall from before Dell replaced my Inspiron 6000 with my 6400, stereo mix worked perfectly fine under Vista, although it had the ancient SigmaTel AC97 audio chipset, not the HD one like the current batch of notebooks do.

Anyways, also I'm very jealous of all of you with microphones in your notebooks.  I guess it's time for me to upgrade, eh? :)

I do have microphone built into my laptop but if you want to use it then you may have to disable the stereo mix first and enable the microphone in the recording tab. I dont have the microphone in the playback tab anymore

RascallyRob, you're a star :smileyvery-happy:

I have a BRAND NEW (Dell - are you listening) XPS M1530 and this 'problem' has had me close to spinning the  thing out of the window.  Did as suggested and it now seems to work a treat - have Stereo Mix and Line In available and recordings so far have been fine.  Is also fine with Audacity.

I do get a COM error when trying to access the control panel but so far I'd rather be able to record than not.

The comments about this from Dell are so weak that even they must be embarassed by them.  Hmmm... got a man on the moon in '69 but it might not be possible to provide stereo mix in Vista.  Is it just me or didn't I just do that?  With an old driver.  In XP mode.  If I had know about this before I bought then I would have been taking my money elsewhere.

This 'problem' should be posted about in large letters on every forum you have access to.  Maybe they will start listening then.

quick addition it looks like I am unable to use both the line in and the stereo mix at the same time.  That kind of  bites is I was able to do it on my previous compact desktop, but I suppose it is something that I can live with, much better than living without stereo mix.  If you guys ever find a way to get that done, you know did that bug fixed, please shout out. thanks again

well I gave it a try myself.  I have a refurbished XPS M1330 Intel core 2 duo 2 GHz processor

I got the driver and I installed it once then I installed it twice and kept getting an error message saying he was not compatible to my system.  Then I remembered I had to make it compatible with windows XP service pack 2 so I did that.  Two new icons showed up in the recording window one for line in and one for stereo mix.  I disabled the digital might the microphone and the line in and only left the stereo   mix on.  I don't know what the sound quality is like but I bet it is going to be fine for my needs.  I use wavepad and I had to figure out whether I was going to use line in this  or the other.

you guys have made life so much easier and have removed a ton of stress from my brain

after a second looking at this it doesn't work as well as I thought, yes I can now get stereo mix but my line input/microphone input has been disabled and I can't seem to reenable it. I have done one system restore and it did not fix the problem now I am going to try a second one. This is not fun. I might have to call technical support myself.

edit very sorry for puttint up three messages in a row instead of just adding to the first as I am new here and could not find the edit button till now,I still cant find the delete message button or I would have condensed all these into 1.

I may have found a possible fix using third-party software. after using Google and Yahoo I came upon this webpage called freecoder:

http://applian.com/freecorder3/download.php

What it did was attach a separate toolbar onto my Firefox browser and I am now able to record streaming audio. I am still unable at this moment to record audio from DVDs for later mixing. But I think this is at least temporarily good enough.it took me a while of loading and unloading drivers and disabling them, the good thing is not only can I record streaming audio, but my microphone/line in jack still works. Which of course was a problem. Now if only Dell and Microsoft can get together and fix this easily fixable problem. XPS m1330. It also says that it adds a toolbar onto Internet explorer but I haven't checked that out yet. P.S. don't forget to enable and disable your line in/microphone appropriately. If third-party software can do this Dell/Microsoft should certainly be able to. Apple Mac next tim

I've been running SP1 since the first beta (I do a lot of Microsoft beta-testing in case you were wondering), and the drivers have worked fine.  I'm running the RTM release of SP1 now.

i am still unable to get both stereo mix with a working line in/mic jack to work at the same time. It's either stereo mix or microphone. It's like I have to change drivers every time. And this really is not fun. seeing as I do not type but you Dragon dictate it makes it very difficult for me have for I am unable to use audacity or wavepad and then dictate these messages. I have to switch out drivers. it is l an either or situation. I was able to get some sound input through the mic jack by switching to the line in function when I'm using the XP driver. But it is barely perceptible. I can see the level moving up and down but the sound can hardly be heard and is of no use. I might try and get a express sound card and use the XP driver and see how that works.I would much rather however just have dell or Microsoft release the driver which I know they can do. Because if I am able to get stereo mix with one driver, and I am able to get the microphone working by using a different driver I see no reason why they are unable to put together both drivers so I can have the best of both worlds. This is more than annoying. I know this is possible. I believe they are being just stubborn and believe it has nothing to do with DRM at all. I am not a pirate. I see no reason why the many have to suffer because of the criminal acts of a few. It seems they're trying to control our creativity and our ability to think out of the box. It reminds me of the original 1984 Macintosh commercial.

any assistance in fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated as I have tried numerous different things.

I have been telling all my friends and will continue to do so to avoid vista like the plague. It is a evil operating system.

for all of us out there that love and miss our stereo mix that we had on XP, I may have found a possible workaround. Some time ago I downloaded the FREECODER TOOLBAR

.I had Googled and Yahooed looking for many ways to get my stereo mix back but was very unsuccessful. I stumbled upon this site and tried it out some time ago. I found it worked pretty well for recording streaming audio.but did not really play around with it too much. A little earlier today I found myself with some free time and decided to give it another go. I found I was only able to record at one level and I also found that I was able to record sounds from DVDs but it was not coming out very well and was clicky and was of no use. It was also using up a great deal of my processor. I went into the settings and switched over from MP3 recording to wave recording..The clicking sounds seem to have disappeared When recording DVD audio. I used Windows media player. I have yet to try a different program such as CyberLink or media direct. By clicking all three boxes on the right side of the settings, including the record for Windows input device box I am able to either amplify or lower the sound of the recording, I'm able to import it into wave pad though I have yet to try audacity.

Note. When I pause during a recording and then try to save it will not save as one file it will save as numerous files with numbers (1),(2)(3) etc..

Here is the page for the user guide

realizing and understanding how cautious most of us are when downloading free third-party software I have to say I have yet to find any problems or viruses.

If any of you want to give this a try and let me know how it works with you I would appreciate it.

PS to the moderators. I am posting to this both here and starting a new thread on the same subject. I hope this will not be a problem. If you must delete one please delete this message and keep the new thread. Knowing how many of us miss our stereo mix very badly I feel it is important to get this message out. Both to the people that have already subscribed to this particular thread and those who will be confronting the problem later on.

Edit it is possible it may have been a bit premature regarding the checking of the Windows input device box and increasing the amplification. it may have been because I have my microphone in at the time. of course sigma tel is only a driver and not a sound card. Still it appears I am able to get a clean sound recording ofDVD audio through Windows media player using the wave format.

Personally, having tried Freecorder Toolbar & given up on it (unreliable, it stopped working for no good reason) - I now use Total Recorder version 7 (just released). This has a dedicated Vista kernel sound driver and is a much better solution, has been working fine for me.

I have given the total recorder program a try.  And it works pretty well but I have discovered that it disables audacity from executing. I wonder if anybody else who has tried using this program has encountered the same problem and I wonder if you're possibly found a way to overcome it.

Thank you
