This message is with regard to the ethernet port on the computer.

Here's a pretty comprehensive list of why one would get the "network cable unplugged" message (taken from the Microsoft.Public.WindowsXP.network_web newsgroup:

1. The network cable really is unplugged.
2. The network cable is defective.
3. It's plugged in, but there's nothing connected to the other end.
4. It's plugged in and connected on both ends, but the device on the other end isn't turned on.
5. The cable is the wrong type.  Connecting two computers directly, without a hub, switch, or router, requires a crossover cable.  A regular cable won't work.
6. The cable is connected to the uplink port on a hub, switch, or router, instead of a regular port.
7. Some hubs, switches, and routers disable the port next to the uplink port when the uplink port is in use.

It means there is nothing connected to the ethernet port on your computer.   Are you asking about a wireless connection (you never said so in your initial post).  If your normal connection is wireless, then the fact that you don't have anything plugged into your ethernet is meaningless.   Please try to better explain what your problem is.

I apologize...I'm kinda new to this.

It is a laptop that I'm referring to.  I have a laptop that connects to the server in our home through a wireless connection.  The connection in our home is good, because our big computer is connecting just fine.  The laptop is showing to have an excellent connection, but I can't pull up a web site, and I'm assuming it's because I keep getting the message that a network cable is unplugged.  I went into the Area Network to disable and then re-enable it, but it didn't help.  I just don't know what the heck the network cable even is, let alone how to "plug" it back in.  I haven't installed any new programs or done anything different with my laptop, so I'm confused as to why this is suddenly acting up.

Okay, so say it really is unplugged.  What exactly is it that's unplugged?  I haven't unplugged anything, so I don't get it.  I just need troubleshooting tips, really.  Is there somewhere on this website I can go to try to fix this problem?

Thanks!

The "Network Cable Unplugged" message is just a symptom on the problem and is diverting us from the real problem.  Since you normally make a wireless connection, your computer usually doesn't attempt to make a connection through your ethernet port.   But, right now your computer is not seeing a wireless connection so it tries to make a wired connection through the ethernet port.  Since there is no cable plugged into the ethernet port, it gives you the message that the network cable is unplugged.

So, we have to concentrate on the wireless connection.  If you open Network Connections, what network connections are listed there?  IF you open Device Manager and expland the listing for Network Adapters, what devices are listed there?  With that information we will know what to do next.

When you reply, make sure to tell us which model computer you have, which version of Windows you are running, and the make and model of the wireless network adapter that you have in that computer.  Otherwise, I will just have to ask for that information again before we can proceed.

You know what, forget it.  I'm obviously just bugging the heck out of youI'll figure it out myself and then you won't have to bother with such a "slow" computer person anymore.  I simply thought someone could share a few ideas...didn't know it was gonna turn into this.

I'm really willing to help, it is just that since I can't see your computer form this end of the internet, I really do need more information in order to help you.  If I ask a question that you don't know how to answer, feel free to ask me how to get the answer.   I can't work blind, so I do need your help if you want my help.
