I don't have any tips for installing or activating the Audigy Advance MB except that the Sigmatel system has to be fully functioning first or else there is no hope. I can't tell from your post if your are getting any audio from your system. If not, this is the normal order of installation for the Sigmatel audio driver. Using a different order will not work. Before trying this, go to the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and if Sigmatel is listed remove it.

a. Install Dell Notebook System Software (click the + sign next to System Utilities). Restart.

b. Next and very important, install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.

c. Finally install the Sigmatel R158235 or R171789 audio driver (click the + sign next to Audio).

Get these from
Vostro 1500 XP downloads

There is a glitch in the installation process with the R158235. These are the tricks used by other owners to complete the installation:

"You have to uninstall an unknown PCI device in Device manager first , then install the driver normally"

"Hi, thanks for the tip !!, the key was remove the device with the warning."

"Another thing I did, and I don't know if is important, was installed a xp fix that comes with the R158235."

This tip is from forum member satcom1973:

"When I go to Device Manager, I see under Sound, video and game controllers everything looks good except SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. There is a yellow circle with a black exclamation point in it, indicating some sort of conflict. Also under OTHER DEVICES is a conflict with Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus. Also under OTHER DEVICES is 3 other conflicts called Base System Device.

I finally got this thing resolved. The trick, at least for me was removing the 3 Base System Device objects. Those ended up being the Ricoh Chipset drivers.

Once I removed those, I ran the install for the Audio. Please note that I did not reboot after installing the 3 Base System Device objects and the install of the audio driver. Only after the audio driver completed did I reboot. After the reboot I was able to then install the drivers for the Ricoh chipset devices."

I hope something here works for you. The process is not easy for some reason. It should be glichless but it isn't.

PS failed installations of the Audigy Advance MB can also cause problems. If you have a problem with Windows Audio Endpoint Builder or if Audio Service has stopped it is a symptom of this.

G'day Jim,

Many thanks for the comprehensive reply; muchly appreciated.

Sorry for not including it in the original post, but yes, the sound is working fine.  The main reason for installing Audigy is that the volume buttons on the front of the Vostro are next to useless without it; there's no way of telling what level the volume is set at without opening the volume manager thingy (when you click on the speaker in the tool tray).

I have installed all the recommended drivers in the order they appeared on the CD.  From my recollection, sound was dead last.  Admittedly, I didn't restart after installing the Intel drivers; may be this is part of the problem.  I'll start by removing all of the associated drivers and then reinstalling the intel drivers and rebooting.  Windows is finicky with those sorts of things.

Re the SigmaTel driver, its definately installed; and I figure its working due to the sound and its appearance in the Sound setup  screen.  That said, maybe its still not quite right......

Interesting re the R158235 driver.  I'll not bother to reinstall it at all and just go to the R171789 I think.

Yes, the modem Hi Def Audio Bus is the Bluetooth driver.  You install it off the CD, however it doesn't get "activated" until you double click on the bluetooth icon in the tool tray; its very odd.  Anyway after you activate it, that question mark will disappear and its all good.

I'll also try not installing the Richo drivers and see if that helps.

I'll post the results.

Many thanks again

Have you installed Dell Quickset yet?
