I ordered a friend a i531 desktop w/Vista.

When she got it, would sleep and never wake.

The only thing I could think of doing (and did) was reinstall Vista.

Not the best option and certainly the last.

I know many who do a reinstall when new just to make sure it's free of bloatware that uusually comes with a new system.

It should wake up when you lightly press the power on/off button.

We have a new XPS M1330 in our family. It has power management issues too. This computer belongs to my sister, I maintain it for her, but she lives 1 hr away, and I have not yet had time with the computer to try to resolve this issue. In our case the problem seems related to the BIOS setting "USB wake support", meaning that the problem changes depending upon how whether this setting is enable/disabled, but in both instances it doesn't work right. BIOS A09 is installed.

I would recommend to you...

* check Dell QuickSet Power Management settings (from memory I think there are related settings there)

* check Windows Power Management settings carefully

* check BIOS settings

Hope this helps,

Lilla

Thanks for the replies.

I do have the latest BIOS loaded but will check the USB wake issue.

Pressing the power button lightly does not bring the screen back. Note that the laptop is actually no longer on standby (I think) because you can hear the drive is on and all other LEDs (WiFi, Bluetooth...etc) are on. Just the screen is blank. I can even eject a CD if one is loaded.

Rebuilding Windows is probably not a far fetched option and I am tempted to just load XP Pro. I am not too crazy about the amount of work I need to do to get things working with Vista!
