No Display (Black Display) - What Video Driver Do I Need? How Can I Fix It?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and in the BIOS, it says 'Video Controller:  ATI Radeon 9000).  I tried to download the software driver from Dell web site and installed the driver.  After completing the Dell software driver installation, I restarted my laptop.  It booted up and I could see Win XP Logo.  Right after seeing the Win XP Logo, the screen went black (black screen - nothing showed up and remained black). I tried to download video driver from another source (omegacorner.com); still, I had the same problem (black screen after boot up). What should I do?  Any help would be appreciated!! I suggest you call Dell for this because it has something to do with the lightpipe. There are workarounds but replacing the lightpipe is the known solution for this problem.
