Have you cleaned it off thoroughly and unblocked all the air vents by blowing air? Try to use a can of compressed air to dislodge and force out as much dust and dirt from the insides of the laptop as you can. You can also open up some of the panels on the bottom of the laptop to get better access to the insides for the cleaning.
Sounds like a couple of hardware failures. Since your warranty has expired, you have a few choices. You can either send the laptop in to Dell for the repairs and pay the out-of-warranty repair cost. Or you can search online for the good laptop repair places (I have heard some people recommend aqstech.com though I have no personal experience with them). Or you can take it to a local repair place if you are sure they have the equipment and personnel to do a good job.
I am having the same issue and my Inspiron 6000 is about the same age. My battery was failing, and the overheating issue began about the same time, so I figured the two were linked. However, I replaced the battery today and am still overheating. Curious.

Start by running a full diagnostic - F12 at boot.

Video Thermistor
Error code: 3900 0626
Msg: Temp. Sensor out of range temp-255C min 10 max 1000

What can I do next. My warranty has expired, so I will be spending from my pocket
I did clean my vents with compressed air, that did not solve the problem
