Hmm...  I'd be okay if they brought Alienware in house and just used the name, but I've never heard anything good about Alienware.

Four models...well, all the models I can think of:

Notebooks:

1330

1530

1730

2010

Desktops:

"One"

210 (Or...whatever

420

630

730

Sooooo they're dropping I guess 4 of the 9 XPS systems?  They could can the 2010 and 210 and few would miss those.  I'd like to see the "One" go, but it's new so probalby not.  Hmm...

I was floored when Dell released the XPS 720 h2C last year. They actually released a system that directly competed with Alienware even though they owned Alienware, I couldn't see the logic in that. It would be the same if Fiat started to make Ferraris.

When I initially heard that Dell bought Alienware I thought they'd do something like this from day 1. Guess it's no surprise now.....

My Guess...

They axe the following:

630

720/730

M1730

I bet they keep the 420, M1530, and M1330 as they aren't really gaming machines IMO, just higher end compared to the Inspirons.

Those systems may be the models that will be discontinued.

But, this comes to mind.  Will XPS Systems buyers now look toward an Alienware product since their desired XPS models have been discontinued?  I have doubts that this will happen.  I believe sales will decrease.

I have looked at the Alienware M17 and when compared to the m1730, the m1730 is a much better gaming laptop purchase than the M17.  The M17 costs more and delivers less for the purchase price.

Maybe Dell will continue the m1730 with the Alienware Logo on it.  And maybe they will continue the other discontinued models with an Alienware Logo.  I just do not care for the look that Alienware offers.  The appearance of all the XPS Systems are superior to anything offered by other suppliers.

my guess is that the oldest systems will be discontinued first. I don't think notebooks are included here, since they all should have fairly good sales, except 1210 maybe?

For the desktops, I could think of disappearance of 720, since there is 730 now. 630 is fairly new, they wouldn't pull it. The XPS all-in-one thing might dissappear as well. But well, you know it is just a rumor still...

As for the m17x vs 1730, I guess this is an interesting topic on its own.

I'd be very surprised if they axe the M1330 and M1530 considering how popular they are.

The 1210 is still offered?!?  If so, this could just be that they're "cancelling" older models that they were going to get rid of anyway.  I can't see them getting rid of the 1730 or the 630 since both are very new and heavily advertised.

It may be they're getting rid of older models plus maybe renaming some system lines to "Inspiron" or something.  The 420 line used to be a Dimension after all, no reason they can't rename it again.

XPS not going away.  Dell clarified their position.  Alienware and XPS will coexist.  Check it out: http://www.cnet.com/8301-13924_1-9943775-64.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

Huh.  If true, that probably just means that report was interpreting the planned phase out of some old systems as getting rid of the line or something.

That would be a much better job.

I don't see the sense in them directly competing with Alienware, that's just confusing at the high end.

They seemed to have added Alienware systems to their Gaming Laptop page...

I agree Dell XPS is much better value for money for both desktops and laptops. I just found it confusing that Dell released systems that directly competed with Alienware - the XPS 730/720 h2C and the XPS M1730 being the prime examples. It would be the same thing if Fiat started to make and sell the equivilant of Ferraris.

I've still never heard ANYTHING good about Alienware, so I hope Dell dosen't go anywhere-unless of course they're just using the name and it's really a Dell that you buy from Dell, get Dell service, etc.
