Also note:  I am running Windows Vista.  Not sure if that will help as it is an issue with the hardware.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the NIC driver? It's specified under Device Manager, Network Adapters. My 1530 has Marvell Yukon. Simply right-click on it and uninstall. You'll need your driver CD to reinstall the it. Also ensure you install all available Windows Updates including optional updates for the NIC you have.

I suppose the port could be damaged. In that case you could use the built-in wirless NIC providing you have a wireless modem or router.

Good Luck.

Check to make sure the NIC is set to AUTO detect and that is gets its IP address automatically.

The fact that you have no lights could indicate the wrong NIC speed or the wrong drivers are loaded for the NIC, redering it inoperative.

Also, you might want to comfirm the NIC installed IS actually installed.

It wouldnt be the first time a manufature has shipped a lappy or compy with a new NIC not listed in the config and loaded the old drivers making the NIC useless.

Dell computers (when running on battery power) Turn off the NIC automatically to preserve power, You can enable this feature permanantly using QuickSet QS in system tray. Hope this helps.

Who's bright idea was that?

It can't be anybody ever working in IT.

You would expect at least an icon in the taskbar where you can re-enable the NIC.

At least it's now good to know, as I am waiting for my M1530 to arrive.
