The sound upgrade is only a software cd audigy advanced HD.Are you reffering to the sound blaster X-FI expresscard?...

Yes, I have the small upgraded sound card, not the Express card.

A friend of mine suggested I just exchange the computer with one just like it, with only the $25 upgraded sound card like I already have.  He is a computer tech and said this problem can not be with all 1720 lap tops and is no doubt just my machine.  I did a google search about 1720s with sound clicking randomly and couldn't find a thing.  This also leads me to believe it is not a common problem.  So, it must be just my computer.

I have called Dell twice and talked with their warranty exchange department and have been cut off twice.  I requested an exchange but they keep saying they are researching my tech records and then I get cut off.

I have spent over 6 hours regarding this issue.  Any ideas?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, it looks as if you have the following video card in your system:

256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600

If this is true, try downloading and installing the following video drivers:

NVIDIA GeForce 8 Mobile series ForceWare Vista Driver v.174.31

Let me know if there is any improvement with the clicking and popping you are hearing.

Thanks!

Well, I downloaded and installed the upgraded driver  There was no change, still clicks and pops, on average, about every 45 seconds.  Audio is important to me so I just can't live with this.  So, today I returned it.

Unfortunately, there is not another model on the market that I like as well.  It has an anti-glare screen which I adore.

I am thinking about taking a couple of weeks and re-ordering and trying again, since I really liked the machine.

Which sound option do you recommend I get?  It has the base one that I assume is integrated, or the Integrated Audigy?  There is also an Express sound card available, but that would take up the one and only express slot.

What do you think?

I'm sorry to hear you had to return the system.

The integrated Audigy is a software upgrade that adds additional features to the audio controller. Most find either integrated option acceptable for casual use.

If you want to connect the system to a Home Theater system or plan to do digital recording, you might want to go for an aftermarket USB or ExpressCard solution.

Other board members may have some specific card suggestions. Anyone?

I do wish to hook up the new Inspirion 1720 when I order it to a stereo and want to have fabulous sound. Will these integrated sound cards give me that?  I won't use home theater, just a stereo.  But again, I want the best sound possible.

Also, can you tell me more about the USB card?  That sounds like it would not take up my one and only Express card slot.  If it is small and just plugs in any USB port, that may the best option for me.  BUT, only if the Integrated card would not sound as good as a separate card when played through a high end stereo (not home theater).

What would you recommend?

William 9787,

Hello, there are quite a few usb sound cards if you go with an expresscard it will not use up your expresscard slot.I have and use at least 3 expresscards with no problems(not at the same time).  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?c=us&category_id=6330&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anav . This is dells site for sound card options,i use the X-FI expresscard with 5.1 surround sound and it is awesome.

Boy, am I lost.  I looked at the Dell site of cards and I'm even more confused.

Can someone please recommend a sound method that will give me great stereo sound for an Inspirion 1720 laptop?

There are 3 options available when you order the computer.  The first is an Integrated device.  The second option is called an Audigy, which I understand is just an enhanced verion of the Integrated sound.  And the third is on an Express Card.  The computer I sent back had the 2nd uprade (integrated).  It sounded great, except for the pops and clicks in the background that were quite bothersome on quiet music.

I know the pops and clicks may have had nothing to do with the sound device (integrated) but I just thought a separate card might be safer, and less likely to have a noise problem.  Please advise me if I am wrong on that.  I just want great stereo sound coming out so I can play it on my stereo.

I still don't understand the USB thing versus the Laptop Express card slot.

Please explain that too.

Thank you so very much for your patience.  Although I returned my first 1720, I can't find anything on the market I like as well and I do want to re-order and give it another chance.

I'm confused as well.  In the buyflow, it appeared that the Express Card (Creative Sound Blaster X-fi) was the best option to get for sound, but now it appears to only work with external speakers.  I assumed it would work for both internal and external.  Dell can't send me the Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition as it must be preinstalled.  Anyone know much about this Express Card?

The X-FI expresscard does work with internal speakers.

I have this card and my internal speakers work with it either hooked up to 5.1 surround sound,or just the internal speakers.

I am the original poster of this thread.  Please help me.  I want to re-order the Inspirion 17" Laptop with the BEST option to give me sound that is pure without clicks and pops.

Please, if I get the Express sound card option, will this probably do the trick?

Also, if I take the card out, to use the slot for something else, will the sound still play, but of course not as pure?

Also, I think a previous note said I could buy some kind of USB adapter and play the Express card with that instead of the slot, and then use the slot if I want to for something else.  Is that right?

Please someone answer these 3 questions.  I want to re-order soon.  Do I just use the standard option, the upgraded integraded sound option, or the Express Card option.

Sorry, that's 4 questions.

I would order it with the sound blaster audigy HD (the software upgrade disk) and i would purchase the sound blaster X-FI extreme expresscard audio for notebooks.

Once you receive laptop and expresscard, set up the laptop first then install your expresscard and go to creatives site and download the X-FI expresscard driver update. This will also install alchemy along with it.The expresscard also gives you stereo mix, which is a plus.

Either with or without external speakers i think you will be happy with the purchase.

OK, I think I understand.

I should buy it with the 2nd sound option called Integrated Audigy.  And, that will come with a CD where I install the HD part.

I should also order the Express card option at the same time from the salesman and install that after the integrated sound is set up.

Then I will be able to use both.  When I want to use the integrated, I simply remove the card.

Have I got all of this right?

Thank you so much for your patience and help.

There are only 3 options when ordering the 1720.

1) Standard Sound

2Integraded Audigy (says nothing about HD)

3Sound Baster Extreem Audio (Which is on the Express Card)

If I just choose the 3rd option, will I also get option 2 to play sound without the card?  But again, option 2 says nothing about HD.

Or, should I order option 2 and buy the card locally?

The second option when ordering is called "Integrated Audigy".  It does not say HD.  When I ordered this option on my first 1720, I did not notice a disk.  Maybe there was one with the others that ship with it, but I didn't use it as the sound was fine out of the box, except for the occasional click and  pop.  I think you are talking about the same option thou.  Am I right?  Should I also use the disk if there is one?

I could then pick up the Express card locally and use that too.  Right?
