When you did the clean XP install, did you start by formatting and repartitioning the drive? If so, did you start with the MD CD to first create the MD partition, then install the OS, then go back and install MD? If you did not do that in that order, perhaps something about MD is messed up causing the problems you are seeing.
I don't run/use MD in any way shape or form. My install was on a new Hitachi 7K200 drive that I got as a replacement for the Toshiba that it came with. I have no MD partition.
I was under the impression that those media keys do not work if MD is not installed on the computer. Since that assumption seems to be completely wrong, I will stand aside and wait for somebody else with better ideas to happen by.
Oh? Yeah they work great, or at least they did. Used the play/pause, fwd, back, stop all in iTunes. And the volume buttons work(ed) great in all things.
