Vostro 1400 - Media/Volume Keys Completely Messed Up

Question

So, at some point over the past few days my media keys have been assinged some additional function that is throwing EVERYTHING else with my keyboard/mouse out of whack. For example, I just went in to a text box on a internet page and got the following: Mute Button: m,.\ Volume Down Button: 78902314 Volume Up Button: fsda- |<< Button - Opened IE Help Stop Button - 5y}{ Play Button - Brought down all the past entries in my address bar >>| Button - Nothing Somewhere in that combo, after pushing one of the buttons, it's as if I'm on endless click lock. My scroll wheel on my mouse works as if i'm holding the CTRL button down and adjusts text in an IE window. Touchpad loses all functionality. Active window maximized, or if IE goes to Full Screen Mode. Log offs and reboots don't fix whatever the key associations are. I'm using a clean XP install. Installed the Dell Quickset app/drivers, but there is no setting there that affects things. Tried a system restore, and no dice. I'm sure it's something retardedly easy, like a setting or check box. But I can't find it anywhere and I reaaaaalllyy don't want to do another clean install. HELP!

When you did the clean XP install, did you start by formatting and repartitioning the drive?  If so, did you start with the MD CD to first create the MD partition, then install the OS, then go back and install MD?  If you did not do that in that order, perhaps something about MD is messed up causing the problems you are seeing.

Also, this is something that just popped up in the past week or so. My windows install is at least 2-3 months old.

I don't run/use MD in any way shape or form. My install was on a new Hitachi 7K200 drive that I got as a replacement for the Toshiba that it came with. I have no MD partition.

I was under the impression that those media keys do not work if MD is not installed on the computer.  Since that assumption seems to be completely wrong, I will stand aside and wait for somebody else with better ideas to happen by.

Oh? Yeah they work great, or at least they did. Used the play/pause, fwd, back, stop all in iTunes. And the volume buttons work(ed) great in all things.
